Couchsurfing seems like an obvious option for me, I don't know why I haven't used it sooner. What better way to gain insider info on the area you're staying that from someone who actually lives there without having to worry about being ripped off or sent to somewhere that is only filled by other tourists.
Cost effective and exciting to stay in the house of somebody you've only just met. Quite obviously a great way to meet like-minded people.

Packing up and moving to England by myself for two years. Shit-scared at the time but turned out to be one of the best things I've ever done. Amazing experiences, amazing people and a time of my life I will never forget.
