About Me

CURRENT MISSION

embracing the temporary while documenting the nostalgic :D

ABOUT ME

ahoy hoy :D i'm vivian!

i do a lot of things...
the most important ones right now, in april 2014, are:

- writing and editing for my music and arts publication, redefine (http://www.redefinemag.com), which is dedicated to socially-relevant long-form arts journalism

- curating interdisciplinary events that push creative limits and gather like-minded people under varied artistic ideas

- hosting an fm radio show called intuitive navigation, on http://www.xray.fm in portland

- doing video projections for the band swahili (http://www.swahilinoise.com) and gathering information for a documentary about psychics (NOT physics!!!)

- doing freelance web and graphic design for small business and non-profits

... blahhhhh

my life is really flexible.
this profile changes like once a year.
feeling listy right now, sowwy!

PHILOSOPHY

"it might be true that there are six billion people in this world, and counting, but nevertheless, what you do makes a difference. it makes a difference, first of all, in material terms, to other people, and it sets an example. in short, i think the message here is that we should never write ourselves off or see each other as a victim of various forces. it's always our decision who we are." - waking life.

i value honesty in all circumstances and believe in the power of intuitive navigation and self-manifestation. give them a try!

Music, Movies, and Books

MUSIC: my musical and in-person loves, GARDENS & VILLA and SWAHILI -- then old-school r&b and soul -- then everyone else that is ever-changing... beach house, neon blonde, la dispute, duchess says, brand new, sechskies, hail social, nurses, the beatles, royal canoe... these are only the constants because they have lasting emotional and nostalgic pull, but i'm kind of all over the place considering i probably listen to 10,000 songs a week via the magazine. regardless -- there's nothing better to me than live electronic music (drum n' bass and funky house especially), and cleverly-written and innovative pop music.

MOVIES: eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, the fountain, magnolia, tree of life, the fall, the edukators, den brysomme mannen (the bothersome man), tout es parfait (everything is fine), delicatessen, a single man, fight club, 12 monkeys, diving belle... primarily stuff with great visuals (in the trippy sense), black comedies, and foreign films.

BOOKS: aldous huxley, vladimir nabokov, hermann hesse, haruki murakami, george orwell, henry miller, sociology textbooks, metaphysical and occultist literature.
