i attended a couchsurfing new years party in austin a few years ago that was a great time.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

during a trip to Mexico, a group of us were in san cristobal de las casas with a textile expert, originally from boston, who had lived there for decades. we arrived at a church in chamula, where, due to his great relations with the townspeople, he took us inside during an annual festival of saints. outside of the church, we saw a procession of dozens and dozens of mayan catholics with paper-mache figures of various holy people. the atmosphere was that of a parade; the people weren't chanting as much as they were cheering. the entire event was unbelievably happy and joyful, and very surreal to me, a then non-practicing american catholic, and was something i was thrilled to be a part of.
