About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To experience my three main interests in everywhere possible worldwide: Roller Derby, Electronic Music, Flow Toys.

ABOUT ME

I absolutely love travelling. In fact, I'm travelling as I write this right now! I've driven across the nation 5 times in the past year, and I spent 7 weeks in Europe from April to June 2011. I play Roller Derby. I'm a referee for women and I play with other men... and let me tell you what: it's beyond fun. It's the best sport I have ever experienced. As I travel, I contact various leagues across the nation (and the world!) to play/practice with them, and so far I've been very successful. I've skated in San Diego, LA, Orange County, Phoenix, Lubbock TX, Houston TX, Pensacola FL, Jacksonville FL, Cork Ireland, Dublin Ireland, Manchester UK, London UK, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Essen (Germany), Stuttgart (Germany) and Seattle WA. I've spent from February 2011 until now traveling across the US and over to Europe, visiting Roller Derby teams, friends and family.I am also a DJ. I mix electronic music ("EDM"), which is commonly referred to as "techno" -- which is a bit misleading. (techno is a very specific genre of electronic dance music. EDM is the term that should be used for electronic dance music in general). I'm also delving into the world of music production. My website is dannysims.comI'm a poi spinner. If you're unsure what that is, search Google Images for it :) In a nutshell, I spin glowsticks on strings, and periodically the on-fire version of this, fire poi. The poi is, instead of being a plastic glowstick, a kevlar wick, and is usually attached to a metal chain with a leather handle. That's about it for now. I'm settled in Los Angeles now, attending college. Hopefully more travelling can be done in 2012 :)

PHILOSOPHY

"You are only as old as you feel" -- Personal quote. "I'm too old" is never an excuse.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: oh wow... that's a long discussion. For now, I'll just say I'm beyond immersed in electronic music, and I have been since 2001. Genres: trance, progressive house, electro house, tech house, minimal, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Drumstep, Psy/Goa Trance, Break beats / Florida Breaks, Eurobeat, Happy Hardcore, Hardstyle.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Two other friends and I started a group in Jacksonville FL dedicated to teaching others how to spin "flow toys" or "skill toys" (definition: any toy/object that requires some sort of rhythm or skill to operate; examples: hula hoops, yoyos, glowsticks in hand or on strings, play swords, staff(s), nunchucks, etc). For almost 6 months, only a small handful of friends showed up (never more than ten), and after about a year of publicizing and interacting with the community, our meetups have grown to over 50 consistently, and consists of a completely diverse group of spinners. Everyone from high school students to grandmothers, every color and race, every origin. Seeing success in this was probably the _most_ rewarding experience I have ever witnessed.
