ABOUT ME

I'm a mongrel, although not one of truly global breeding. Born in England, raised in Cork, lived in London, Dublin, Boston. American mother. I'm no diplomats child, but I'm not too far off.

PHILOSOPHY

I think it comes down to what you personally feel about life, in your gut, behind your belly button. Our experiences certainly shape us, but is it every person's unique mix of experience which makes them who they are, or is there something else going on?

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I figure that the basic premise of Couchsurfing is a kind of general good will swap. By hosting people on my couch, I sort of generate points which allow me to meet other amazing people and experience other cultures in the best way possible, locally. It's not a karma marketplace, rather a good deed platform.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I first surfed for 3 nights in Buenos Aires with a guy called Juan. The best way to travel the world, unless you're a millionaire/sociopath. Can't wait 'til my next trip (and I sound like an acid fiend).

I hosted a French bio conservationist called Stephan. He was v. cool. I'm relatively new at this, but so far I have nothing but positive experiences. I've hosted a bunch of others to, but he was my first, so gets special mention.

Hanging out with random people has never been so great. Just the fact the a couchsurfer trusts their fellow human is enough to break any barrier. Why do we like modern society if it sets up these bullshit, "no eye contact on the street" unspoken rules? Couchsurfing is either very real or VERY, very fake!

Interests

Stars, music, poetry, surfing, football (gridiron, you pedant), politics, photography (Pentax K-series, 35mm), you, me. Have you ever been on your own in public and suddenly it just seems like the whole world around you is resonating in unison? Well, why that happens.

Love, hate and war. The phenomenon of criminals running countries and multinationals which have more money than countries. Cosmetics spending which outstrips food spending. Death. Unity.

Music, Movies, and Books

Having a favorite book ever would imply having been in one stationary mood for an entire life. Sometimes I like sci-fi. Fewer sometimes I enjoy a good ole' yarn about the challenges of courtship and finding love in Georgian England. Other times again, I like graphic novels....so I guess my favorite book would be a graphic novel about a time traveling Elizabeth Bennett who finds love in the year 3089.

Music, Bob Dylan. 'Tombstone Blues' is uber funky. If Dali wrote a song, I imagine it would be a lot like that. Strangely though, if Dylan painted a picture, I wouldn't imagine it would be anything like a Dali.

I'm a self-professed sci-fi geek. I dig the oldies. Asimov, Clarke, Wells, Bradbury. Oh, Douglas Adams. I would be missing a huge part of my self if I'd never got into Hitchhiker.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Friends and I were backpacking in South America. We were hiking up a small gorge with a little river in it. The sides were very steep and overgrown with jungle. On the spur of the moment, I decided to take off up the side of the gorge, just to see what was at the top. I had to force my way through vines while slipping up the slope. I lost my sunglasses, but didn't notice til later. I was about to give up, steaming from exertion. Then with a final push, I burst through the last of the vegetation into a small field which sat right under the huge volcano, Cotopaxi. There were four horses in the field and I lay down in the grass and waited for them to come snuffling around me. I took a picture and it came out with a weird line through it.

Teaching: how to throw an American football, how to pitch a magazine story, basic quantum physics, surfing, bad dancing

Sharing: Is this a words of wisdom thing? At 25, I'm still working out my words. If it's about sharing stuff, then what's mine is yours.
