ABOUT ME

I'm a single, tall and ambitious man, persistent in his mission to learn something about everything and everything about something! :)

Currently I continue to use that knowledge in order to find ways to reconcile human activities and the need to feed the world, with biodiversity conservation and a sustainable future.

I use science, politics, literature, photography and art.

PHILOSOPHY

Some of you may have already recognized those words up there: "try to learn something about everything and everything about something" That's a quote from Thomas H. Huxley's and it's one of my favourites.

I am a scientist but I am also a catholic christian. And I do like to follow teachings such as "love each other as I loved you".

I believe in peace, harmony and balance. And I can envision a global civilization, joined by common goals.

I have hosted and I have been hosted, too. Nowadays, when I am in Lisboa, I usually am only able to hang out or meet you for a drink if our schedules fit.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I travel regularly, I love to show the city or maybe going to the beach, but can't host at the moment!

So far, my journey on this planet has been enriched with a huge variety of literature since I first became aware of my own existence. :) A childhood of comic books (e.g. Disney, Moebius) and encyclopedias evolved into a daily life of poetry (e.g. Pessoa, Rilke), science journals (e.g. ecology, animal behaviour) and press (e.g. the economist, the guardian) with the occasional novel in it (e.g. Vergílio Ferreira, García Márquez).

I love cinema. From the 16th century troubled times of the Jesuits in The Mission to the futurism of Gattaca or the simple pleasures of Amélie, the list is quite long. Sometimes it's not about the movie. It's a certain scene, a particular segment of dialogue, a detail that invades my heart.

Always very much in tune with the news, I get easily immersed into documentaries and once in a while enjoy following TV series (Lost and the X-Files are my all time favorite dramatic series, and Seinfeld is still my favorite sitcom ever).

Music is another fundamental part of my life. I'm constantly listening to new artists and exploring the scene. But I'm ecletic. Rachmaninoff still moves me with his piano concerts, The Beatles, Queen and Guns N' Roses are still the best rock bands ever and there is no alternative music better than what Radiohead did some years ago. Although Arcade Fire are pretty good also! =)

I don't eat meat but do eat some fish once in a while. I love mediterranean cuisine and I definitely have a sweet tooth! :P

And lemon is the most divine flavor in existence. There, I said it.

The legend tells that I once gave an interview to Playboy magazine and spent a year studying the behaviour of wild mongolian horses. ;)

It is possible to have a planet where we are able to simultaneously live in human societies, with our human activities, have agriculture, have industry and at the same time safeguard biodiversity and the ecosystems on which we all depend.
