Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Surfing and hosting, sharing ideas and jokes and experiences, being friendly and welcoming. I have promoted CS in local street press: http://www.mergemagazine.com.au/verge/couchsurfing
Exploding myths about the places I have lived in:
Myth 1. That Adelaide (Australia) is 'boring'.
There are so many excellent local bands and venues, artists and art spaces, small creative communities, beautiful bike routes and fun things happening here that laziness is the only excuse for this opinion!
Myth 2: That Tijuana (Mexico) is dangerous and horrible.
it's a lovely, alive, weird, grimy-interesting, hilarious, unique place full of kind, interesting, creative and awesome people, good food, surprises and contradictions!
Myth 3: That Oakland (CA) is dangerous and horrible!
NOT EVEN! It's just RIDICULOUS that every news story about Oakland, even those about fantastic artistic events or cultural initiatives, is framed as though the spectre of imminent crime is breathing down every citizen's neck 24/7 and it's all we can do to put on a brave face and distract ourselves (with excellent food, awesome art, bangin' street events and lovely architecture, of course!) Every city has its problems ... not least a certain gleaming city across the Bay ... Oakland's charms far outweigh the over-hyped drawbacks.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
trusted a random unknown Tijuana local on a bike to guide me home from the San Ysidro border to Otay Universidad late at night, learned through our puffing-up-a-hill, broken spanish/english conversation that he had been in prison and eventually deported for 'bad things - i keep out of all that now', got to my street, bought him a coke, hugged goodbye in the cool darkness.
Teach, Learn, Share
How to save money at christmas: http://www.mergemagazine.com.au/verge/creativegifting
How to make a firecracker: wrap two rolls of caps around a dime / 2peso piece / 5c Australian coin. Do another one the same, and then tape the two together tightly with scotch tape. Chuck it on the ground for a big bang!
Also, the secret to cartooning is to really look at people... and, more than one type of eyes :-)
