About Me

I'm a travelling developer with aspirations of coding on the road. Mostly travelling to understand what makes local food so good around the globe, as well as how I can reproduce it at home. Food is my life any time I'm not making software.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Honestly, I've tried exploring cities staying at hostels and making friends at events, and it always felt a little...artificial? Staying with friends who lived locally always led to me having a better time and finding better places to spend an evening, and I imagine that's more the 'local' part than the 'friend' part.

I also love-love-love hearing people's stories. Even a white guy from America like me has something interesting to offer, and most couchsurfers have clearly seen a lot more of the world than I have.

Interests

I'm an extremely skilled cook and am a huge snob about basically anything that tastes good, and a few things that don't. I'm suspiciously small for someone who loves to eat as much as I do.

I'm also big into feminism and tabletop games (Dungeons and Dragons and the like). I love telling stories and letting people help me guide them.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm big into chill EDM, especially drum and bass, trance, and nu-jazz. Funk music is also a huge thing. I genuinely haven't found a genre I dislike on principle.

I don't watch a lot of movies or read a lot of books, but anything by Edgar Wright for films and anything by Terry Pratchett for books tend to be my go-tos.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've toured the coast of South America on a boat with no English-speakers, including making some back-room deals with a guide in Venezuela to get a better exchange rate to Bolivars.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm extremely knowledgeable about linguistics, especially the linguistics of foreign accents, and love both talking about the science behind it and hearing people's accents.

If you speak English, just chat with me for a while so I can study your voice. I promise it's less weird than that sounds.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I would be happy to make you an excellent dinner (and clean up afterward, of course) if I crash on your couch for the night, in terms of direct compensation, but I'm also from a part of America that very few people who travel hail from - the rural areas of Pennsylvania. You probably haven't met someone who's experienced things like what I have, and I'd love to tell you about it.
