One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
My experience traveling and studying in Asia. I wrote a testimonial about it.
Last year, 2014 was a remarkable year. I had really nice ups but also some very deep downs and I had to wrestle with my thoughts a lot, but those things happen. "That is the essence of life" people say. Since August 2014 and that moment is still ongoing, I experienced something new, I saw a world which from my perspective was a world I only knew from other people or from television, a world besides my safe home in the Netherlands. It was a breathtaking experience but also tremendously confronting. I never felt that much ashamed and even a bit disgusted by people from western civilizations before. I mean this regarding their behaviour.
We are always complaining about so many things and most of the times really minor stuff that I am not even going to mention. But we do not realise how lucky we really are, we are lucky to live in the Netherlands or in the more modern part of the world. The general part of the people from the Netherlands and the western world are not even aware how lucky they are and are only focussing on the negative aspects, money and power. Besides that everybody needs to have an oppinion about everything. Why is it not possible to accept each other in any kind of way?
I have seen people with no roof above their head and showering in the rain because of a lack of water, I have seen ten thousands of people living in sheds with a size of maximum 2 by 2 meter with a family of 4 people and located 1 meter from the train tracks, I have seen people who don't get any support from governments, children who never set a foot in a school, homeless mothers with little babies at 3 o' clock at night begging for money, kids of 4 years that need to steal wallets to provide for their families, children of 4 or 5 years who were collecting plastic trash between traintracks with driving trains all the time and I could go on for some time.
But what I found was the most astonishing thing of all, despite all the circumstances the people of Indonesia and Thailand are in, they smile so much more, they are so much more friendly and they have sincere respect for each other.
They are way less negative than for example the Dutch with all their complaints all the time. They value life and the smaller things in life so much more eventhough their life circumstances are worse than in the western civilizations. They are thankfull, something we should do more often.
Besides this already remarkable observation I also saw something suprisingly different in Indonesia, this is the country with the largest muslim population in the world. I expected something different from the way the media influences our oppinion on Islam and the generalisation of it. Instead in Indonesia every religion is living respectfully and peacefully next to each other, they all accept the religions of each other, no disrespect or discrimination about their believes. Christians, next to Muslims, next to Hindus and next to Buddhist. An example for the rest of the world, they show that it is possible.
This year trully opened my eyes, I enjoy life now even more than before. Meeting new beautiful people and building up great friendships; but also watching the nature, seeing everything alive and moving around. From the birds in the sky to the waves touching the beaches, from schools of fish or an easygoing turtle taking a breathe at the surface, children running with a kite or elderly people sunk away in their thoughts, beautiful landscapes and astonishing architectures.
I found out life is as complicated as you make it in your own mind. I am now going to quote a great man who taught me one of my life lessons - my grandfather he spoke these wise words: "Be kind to each other and stay true to yourself" and I wanted to add one more thing to that: "Be thankfull and enjoy the small things in life."
Thank you 2014 for opening my eyes, we had a good run.
