ABOUT ME

I'm a Canadian living in the US, I recently moved to Hawaii from Victoria, BC and I've been loving the sun and sunshine around here. My wife and I are both continuing students at the University of Hawaii, I also have BAs in linguistics and government from the University of Texas at Austin.

My main thing is travel, learning languages, and geology. My academic focus is physical volcanology and I've spent time studying many of the active volcanic systems in the world. I really appreciate good hikes that show off unique landscapes of places and I'm pretty happy to explain how things got the way they are (geologically) if I'm able to tell.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've couchsurfed a couple of times and I've crashed on sofas after hitchhiking. I tend to be social and outgoing rather than someone who wants to just get out and see the sights without talking to people, but I get those who are that way. My wife and I usually travel together and in some ways this page doubles as a page for both of us, but if I'm travelling as two people I'll make that super clear.

We may have room open for a counchsurfer or two here in Honolulu, it will depend hugely on our work/academic schedule and how long someone is planning on staying, but we'd like to help show anyone around who wants to see the area or get a little bit of a local insight to the den of tourism that is Waikiki.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Through this site, my wife and I stayed with an amazing Icelandic couple and had a great time. While they were both busy people they made time for us in the evenings and there was a lot of social time and talking about life in Reykjavík. We also stayed with a couple in Norway after standing outside a concert in Biri with a sign written in passable Norwegian asking for either a ride back to Oslo or a place to stay, which was seriously a fun time had by all.

I'm hoping to have some more experiences couchsurfing, possibly in Polynesia since I'm living here now.

Une aventure extraordinaire que j'ai vécue

I spent a month of a research ship doing work on Havre volcano in the Kermadec Arc of New Zealand. I helped process samples, operate cameras on the deep submersible ROV, process data from the autonomous drone we had, and I valiantly got constantly seasick. It was an absolutely fantastic experience and I'm still working on the data we got from that trip.

Enseignez, apprenez, partagez

I have a linguistics background, I'm pretty happy and eager to learn any of the local languages where I am. My geology background is probably stronger, if you want to know anything about the local geology in your area or any other I can probably lend a hand in figuring it out, or I can do a good old fashioned "What rock is this?" pretty well.
