About Me

Hmm... my "current news" is now quite a few years in the past. I'll leave it there as what I was up to when I was more active with CS. I still live in Sydney and go out a lot on weekends.

ABOUT ME

Current news
30 Nov 2009

Just realised that I hadn't updated my location since moving back to Sydney about 6 months ago. Sorry to those who were expecting me to still be in London! If you are in Sydney though, you will generally find me VJing at monthly TECHnique parties and other gigs as they come up.

10 Feb 2009

Been in London since last writing. Nothing too exciting, but it did snow a lot the other day. The whole city practically shut down. Or so I'm told; I stayed in. :o) Need to move again in March, and still waiting for my deposit back from my previous flat... bloody estate agents!

02 Nov 2008

Ars Electronica in Linz and the Czechsurfing meet in Prague were great. I've also since spent some days in Denmark since then visiting a friend for our (shared) birthday. Back in London again and my gig at The Dogstar is now every Wednesday night. Starting to seem a bit like work... ;o)

24 Aug 2008

Planning a two week trip in September: Thu 4 - Tue 9 Ars Electronica Festival (Linz, Austria); Wed 10 go to Czech Republic (stay a day in Ceske Budejovice?), Fri 12 - Sun 14 Czechsurfing meeting; Mon 15 to Berlin for a day or so and back to London on Wed 17. The bread around that tasty sandwich filling is a VJ gig in Brixton, the night before leaving and again on the night I come back (hectic!). See my Ars Electronica 2008 page for updated details.

09 Aug 2008

Moved in to a flat in Shoreditch (between Brick Lane and Old Street) this week. My room has a couch, but I'm still settling in and am yet to discuss the possibility of hosting CouchSurfers with my new flatmates. I've been meeting some visualists and people into electronic music here in London, and have another residence, or rather residency: supplying visuals for a fortnightly Wednesday night party called Mind! at The Dog Star in Brixton, starting the first week of September - Roots, Reggae, Danceall, Drum & Bass, Dubstep and Breakbeat.

16 Jun 2008

Back in London. The househunt begins.

06 Jun 2008

Austria - Psytasia Castelval, Schloss Leiben. Three days at the festival with friends, then a day in Salzburg before heading back to England. Spent the rest of the week near the ocean with friends in Essex.

31 May 2008

Touchdown in London.

09 May 2008

Booked a ticket to London today. Due to land in old blighty on Saturday 31 May. Plans to travel to Austria around 6-9 June for a festival with some friends. Other plans... still noticeably absent!

21 Feb 2008

Christmas and New Year came and went. Pete's Ridge was a bust (rained out / cancelled). I was offered a job in Sydney - first time working in the city - so will be doing that for a while. Still have a general plan to head back to London later this year. Not too late... :o)

30 Nov 2007

Back in Sydney, living with the folks, and Volunteering / flyering for the Pete's Ridge Festival (Dec 29 - 1 Jan), a sustainable arts and music festival about 1 hour north of Sydney. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get out of the city for New Years.

17 Nov 2007

After a month or so languishing in London (hadn't found a place to live, etc) and not looking forward to the impending cold, I decided that heading back to Sydney for some summertime was a good idea. That was some weeks ago. Since then I've been to visit a friend in Austria for a few days, bounced back through London and am now on my way home. Current location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for a four day stopover... After 4 months abroad and almost home I've had my mobile and camera (still holding photos from Austria) stolen. Better at the end than at the start? Still, no fun. :o(

17 Sep 2007

Arrived in London from Portugal last weekend, and started at The End with Jeff Mills at the controls. Kept a pretty low profile (nothin' doin'... no sightseeing, etc) through the week and on Friday took a train to Exeter for the Waveform Project music festival at Powderham Castle in Exeter. First time I used the tent I've been carrying around with me the past two months from Sydney, and possibly the last... probably should have left it where it was - after packing it up missed my train back to London and a new ticket cost £58, more than seven times the value of the tent! Back in London this evening, and it's time to start looking for a new home, and, unfortunately, work. Boo to that.

01 Sep 2007

Spent some time in Cologne and went to the Love Parade in Essen (about 75km from Cologne). I'm now in Amsterdam, and on Tuesday (4 Sep) I fly to Portugal. Flight booked to London next Saturday (8 Sep).

16 Aug 2007

Spent a couple of weeks in Berlin, a day in Hamburg and a week in Ringsted (near Copenhagen, in Denmark). Now in Munich for a week or so.

12 Jul 2007

Have arrived in Europe! A brief stop in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam (only a few hours) along the way to Rome, and am presently in Venice. Tomorrow leaving for the Rototom Sunsplash festival, about 160km from here (?), and perhaps after that going to Germany. Would love to hear from any Germans out there!

26 Jun 2007

My passport has been sent back to me with a 2 year working holiday visa for the UK. Yay!

21 Jun 2007

I've moved out of my city apartment in Sydney and am staying with my parents a few weeks before taking off for Europe. I'm planning to live there for a while, or perhaps should say am intending to live there for a while - not much planned just yet! Renewed my passport, have a return ticket landing me in Rome on 10 July 2007 (insane short-notice whim to go with a friend) and stressing about trying to obtain the visa in less than three weeks! I don't even know what is going to happen when I get to Italy - we're supposedly meeting people my friend knows at a reggae festival called Rototom Sunsplash, north of Venice... after that heading to Germany? Don't know where, how or when, or when I'll be getting to the UK. Maybe going around some festivals for a while. I'm kinda scared but for the moment decided to just do it! Wish me luck. :o)

General
Updated: 10 Feb 2009

I love music and dancing, and am into photography and graphics. I put on visuals for gigs and parties. In Sydney: Midi In The City, Just Like Now and Laptopjam (all live electronic music gigs); a couple of Plug 'n' Play gatherings; and some nice house parties. In London I was the resident VJ for Mind! Reggae Dubstep at The Dogstar in Brixton, and have also gigged at: Vibe Live, Brick Lane (Sound on Vision); Cafe 1001, Brick Lane (VJlondon.org meetups); Parker McMillan, Moorgate (LegoPops); T-Bar, Shoreditch (Digital City and VJlondon.org meetups); The Horse and Groom, Shoreditch (Mooch); and The Others, Stoke Newington (Challenged). Music + visuals... what more could you want? :o)

I've seen a fair bit of the east coast of Australia, spent three weeks in New Zealand, and about a month in Europe in 2003. That trip to Europe wasn't what I was hoping for, but at the same time I didn't know what I wanted to do and see. Returned to Europe in 2007, and, again, didn't have a proper plan! Was expecting to be travelling with a friend and a German dude around summer festivals, but after the meeting in Italy (and drive to Germany) had to make new plans. Sydney - Rome - Venice - Rototom Sunsplash Festival (in Osoppo, near Odense) - Weiden (in Bavaria, Germany) - Berlin - Hamburg - Denmark (Ringsted & Copenhagen) - Munich - Cologne (and nearby Essen for the Loveparade) - Amsterdam - Portugal (Albufeira, in the Algarve) - London - Waveform Project (in Exeter, England) - Innsbruck (Austria) - Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) - Sydney. Four months all up, with about half of that based in London and the rest mainly in Germany.

Stereotypes are a handy basis for quick evaluations (depending on the situation), but don't close your mind to a person being outside of their apparent stereotype. Appearance is not everything.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Updated: 02 Nov 2008

Heard about the CouchSurfing project in December 2006, and think it's a great idea. I've had friends stay before, and have now hosted a couple of CouchSurfers met through this site (spontaneous long weekend with a Frenchie in May 07, and an invited Melbournite in Jun 07). I've moved out of my city apartment, so that will be the end for now.

I have the full intention to have a blast with local CouchSurfers wherever I find myself. Hosting, staying, and meeting for a drink/coffee have so far all been positive experiences, and I hope to bring similar experiences to other people as I travel.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Updated: 02 Nov 2008

General: I have slept on many couches (and some floors!) in the past (before discovering CouchSurfing.com), and have now been CouchSurfing proper. I've also surfed my own couch a few times... quite by accident - it's too comfy and you just can't get up sometimes! ;o)

Sydney Dec06-Jan07: Tanja (Austria) introduced me to the CouchSurfing project. We're old friends. She stayed at my place in Sydney a couple of weeks and we went on a trip to New Zealand.

Melbourne Jan-Feb 07: Surfed with Emma and Lauren in Toorak, and while there met Fabian for a drink with his friends after work, some other Melbourne CS hosts at a dinner afterwards in St Kilda, and Erika for a coffee and a walk around South Bank.

Sydney May 07: A sudden rush of CS activity! Hosted my first 'unknown' CouchSurfer, Aurore (France), for four nights. Met Yvonne (Germany) for drinks and a chat the day Aurore left, Helene (UK) the following day for lunch and Michael (US) later in the week! Met another CSer or two for dinner with Helene on another occasion, and a boatload of CSers (more than twenty, I reckon) at a CS gathering organised by Natasha & Debs (UK) at the Courthouse Hotel in Newtown, including Evan (Sydney), Chiara (Italy), Nico (Taiwan), Michael (Austria), Edwin (China), Pete (Sydney), Damien (the Gong).

Sydney Jun 07: Hosted Erika (Melbourne) for a weekend and went to Sydney Aquarium with Yvonne (Germany).

Hamburg Aug 07: Hosted by Yvonne for a night on my way to Denmark from Berlin.

Linz Sep 08:
Hosted by Martyna for the entirety of the Ars Electronica Festival in Austria.

Prague Sep 08:
Czechsurfing - the central European CouchSurfing meetup. Hosted by Miriam (planned) and Djali (unplanned), and met a slew of CouchSurfers.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Updated: prior to 01 Jun 2007

Can't think of something totally amazing just now, but I jumped out of an airplane over Lake Taupo in December 2006 - something I thought I might never do.

Less amazing but infinitely more important are having helped a friend and a parent through very troubled times in their lives, where without the help they might not be around any more.

The funniest thing I ever saw was a friend taping his arm to his head, but I think you had to be there at the time to really appreciate it. ;o)
