About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My mission is to be a contribution to the world, through love, knowledge and justice.

ABOUT ME

Hello CS World, my name is Sol. I have the privilege and honor of working in my local community for a non-profit organization that works with youth and families experiencing and confronting homelessness. We provide counseling and housing resources because everyone regardless of their situation, background or choices in life deserves the right to safe, decent and affordable housing. I work with an amazing group of people who everyday feel inspired by a mission and empowered to live and work their values. I am born and raised in Chicago, have also lived in NYC and have traveled around the world for business and work. I love my family and grew up in a very close knit clan where everyone was a cousin, aunt, uncle and you always kissed your elders. My family taught be how to eat, dance, laugh out loud, fight and most of all love. Over the past few years, my heart's been swept up my new niece, she is 3 years old and a total light in my life. When I'm feeling tired or drained, I think of her, look at photos and it lights me up to think of the enormous amount of love and innocence that her being is. Even through the tears and tantrums, I'm clear about the blessing and love that children are for the world.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have just joined the CS community and am very excited about the opportunity to connect with people from around the world. When I travel, I prefer to meet and gather with locals in order to get a real experience of life and culture in their living place.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've just joined CS, so I've only met a couple of people, but am looking forward to doing meet ups and sleeping on someone's couch...please??!!!

Interests

Clearly I love to travel and got the bug years ago when I did a summer abroad semester in college and haven't stopped since. I'm moved by the idea of being comfortable with the uncomfortable which is why I love traveling to places outside of my country, which are different from my culture, language and customs. This gives me the opportunity to experience humanity and the earth in a whole new way and in so doing makes be a more loving, just and tolerant woman. As I grow older...yes I'm in my 30's and can't believe it either!!!...I'm wanting to get the other side of my brain to do more exercise, so I've taken on learning a new language...I chose Arabic after my visit to Morocco last year. I've always been fascinated with the culture, language, food and people, so I chose to learn it. I have been studying with an Egyptian professor in Chicago doing one on one lessons for the past 7 months. And i'll tell you it's been quite the brain workout learning how to read, write and speak Modern Standard Arabic. But I absolutely love it and have recently had 2 dreams where I'm actually speaking fluently and having some type of adventure, somewhere with someone....

Music, Movies, and Books

I am Puerto Rican, so I love Latin music, with salsa being my favorite.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Have been blessed to see so many amazing places and do absolutely crazy stuff...but a recent memborable amazing thing was watching the birth of my niece. The absolute power of human beings to love and exist is and always will be completely mind blowing when you're watching a live birth.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have been fortunate to work in the area of community development over the last 8 years of my life. So I have alot of skills in the area of non-profit management and fundraising activities. I would be happy to share information about the experience of working in a community based organization and providing human services to youth and families. I enjoy learning about everything, in particular culture, politics, history and languages. Also I love to dance, so am always up for learning or trying out a new dance style type.

Countries I’ve Visited
