Music, Movies, and Books
Movies: Miyazaki any day of the week. I have a love/hate affair with Wes Anderson.
Music: Hip hop, alt-pop, folk-grunge, the usual. I love it when people sing in their own accents, especially if it's from Sheffield or Liverpool. Banjos. Harmonicas. Violins. Sigur Ros.
Books: are my most precious possessions. My copies of Les Miserables, Crime and Punishment, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Lord of the Rings, Love in the Time of Cholera, my Bible and my anthology of C.S Lewis' essays are my favourites.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
When I was a kid, I got lost from my family's snorkelling tour when we were on an island in Vanuatu. I left my brother's side and just kept swimming out into the ocean until all I saw underneath me was a colossal shaft of darkness going on infinitely below me. I was so small and vulnerable and lost and excited and I just kept swimming until through the darkness in front of me I saw an immense wall of coral. I will never forget that moment, seeing the pink and blue and golden hive of life, swaying and existing just below the surface and right in front of a lost girl's eyes. I swam across the reef, witnessing the comings and goings of every kind of sea creature that a nine year old can imagine, not daring to touch anything lest it disappear. After gorging my eyes on everything, I looked up out of the water and saw a boat looking for me. I told myself to never forget that feeling of discovery, and I never have.
Teach, Learn, Share
I like learning about geography, Baroque architecture, how to tell if a mushroom is poisonous, the quirky customs of certain cultures, etc.
What I Can Share with Hosts
The best way to be open minded is to encounter the thoughts of others and interpret them generously and lovingly, seeking genuinely to understand. I love sharing and swapping thoughts on things!
