Overview
About Me
Konnichiwa! My name is Susan and I am traveling around Japan by bicycle with two friends. I am originally from Bellingham, Washington State -- close to Seattle. I am a dual citizen of New Zealand and the United States.
I am travelling with two other women who live in New Zealand and we all work in conservation. 😊
I am a Freshwater Ecologist and am passionate for all things fish-related. I grew up in a fishing family, worked in the salmon fishing industry in Alaska, studied Fisheries and Aquaculture and now have a job managing fish conservation.
We love walks in nature and anything in the outdoors. We are equipped with camping supplies and are entirely self-sufficient.
We are cycle touring around Hokkaido from July 2 - July 18 and we want to meet Japanese locals. Even for a coffee, walk or conversation. Bonus if we can stay or camp, but no pressure.
We are excited to meet you and learn more about Japan! One of us can speak a little Japanese (but very slowly).
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I have Couchsurfed in the past (Europe, New Zealand) and love meeting people from the area. Connection while travelling is important to me -- and I have a place on New Zealand if anyone wants to visit 😊

Music, Movies, and Books
I love old-time country like Johnny Cash. Folk music, indie, jazzy electronic, classical piano, celtic jams ...
Teach, Learn, Share
I want to learn anything about your culture, passions and favorite foods.
I like hearing about ongoing social and political issues and the opinions of others. Teach me anything you are willing to share!
What I Can Share with Hosts
We are happy to prepare a meal for our host or help out in any way I can to repay for your hospitality! I don't mind cleaning or doing chores around the house. I can talk about salmon for days and have a brain full of fish biology facts. I am also a cat whisperer if you have a feisty feline in need of taming.
