Suzette is a semi-retired ESL teacher at Niagara College in Welland, Ontario, Canada. Evan is a retired Mechanical Designer. We live in Fonthill, Ontario, which is very close to Niagara Falls. We've been married for 36 years.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To be honest, we are probably more interested in using the services of Couchsurfing than in providing them (we already belong to Warm Showers, a database site for bicyclist accommodations, and we host frequently), but that could always change! Some of our warmest travel memories are of times when we met someone along the way who shared their home with us for the night. After reading some of the host profiles in a place we'd like to visit, it occurs to me that these people might also be willing to share what they know about their town and just meet with us when we are there, which would make our visit so much more memorable. We would certainly be happy to do the same with visitors to Niagara.

Interests

Evan is an avid bicyclist and woodworker who loves to do many outdoor activities. I love cooking, sewing, singing, reading, and going to concerts, films, and art galleries. We both love kayaking and tent camping. We both do volunteer work: Evan with Big Brothers and Habitat for Humanity and Suzette with local social service organizations. Together, we love to travel and have been all over the US and Canada, as well as about 35 countries around the world. We love meeting people from other countries and cultures.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: A little bit of everything, really, but what really gets me going is Roots/Folk/Americana, R&B/Soul, and the songs I sing with my ladies show choir, the Treblaires.
Movies: Offbeat/quirky/indie, foreign films (we belong to a film subscription series at a local cinema); basically anything that is not Hollywood blockbuster!
Books: I belong to a book club, so I've become used to devouring all kinds of fiction; as a result, it's hard to name a favourite kind of book. I'll try at least the first 20 pages of anything!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My husband and I, over the course of several six-month trips, have bicycled throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Japan. We have also traveled by van and camped throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well, I am an ESL teacher, so I'm qualified to teach the English language, but I've also taught people to use computers and software, and I think it would be fun to teach cooking and sewing. There are plenty of things I still would like to learn, and since discovering that people over 60 can audit courses at a nearby university for free, I'm looking into history, art, and linguistics courses. I'm about to take a willing friend up on his offer to teach me to knit, and plan to join the local art association, mostly to take the classes they offer. I've really enjoyed sharing the highlights and history of our region with visitors over the past few years.
