About Me

Hi there! My name is Sydney Miller. I am a cheerful, friendly, positive, not so serious person. I am a learner, lover, and pursuer of Anthropology. My love for travel and adventuring, traventuring!, has taken me many places in the world to work with various groups of people. I love writing and blogging, I play the guitar, and I love riding my bicycle. I am also an avid outdoor adventurer. I have worked for various companies leading and teaching outdoor adventure skills. This is a huge part of my life and know (well, definitely hope!) that it will always be a big part of my day to day, or at least weekend to weekend schedule.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on Couchsurfing because I want to meet great people while visiting a new place, and want to show people MY favorite spots when they visit me! I think it is really important to find ways to support each other in financially difficult times as well as meet and spend some time with people who share similar (and different ) interests. Couchsurfing is a wonderful opportunity to build communities that emphasizes trust and support, facilitate (potentially cross-cultural) communication, and build larger networks of connection.

Interests

I'm really interested in food. LOVE food. I am interested in maintaining a healthy , happy lifestyle by spending most of my time outside and laughing. I like learning new languages. I enjoy white water kayaking (and any kind of adventure with boats in water) backpacking and rock climbing. I love cappuccinos. I play the guitar and fiddle (and a number of other instruments), and enjoy the campfire, smore making sing along to Wagon Wheel.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Gregory Alan Isokov, Milo Green, Horse Feathers, The Head and the Heart, Iron and Wine, Joe Purdy, Ray LaMontague, California Honey Drops, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Milky Chance, Noah and the Whale, Pete Yorn,

Movies: I'm not much of a movie person anymore. My family lives off the grid, and so I've become more of a book person. But I love watching documentary films, or occasionally even going out to see a new movie.

Books: Recently loved Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, Out Steeling Horses by Per Petterson, Insectopedia by Hue Raffles, The Body Multiple by Annmarie Mol, Nickle and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, The Help by Katheryn Stockett

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I coordinated 6 UCSC volunteers to work with local populations in the Maldive Islands teaching mosquito control techniques in order to decrease the population of Aedes agypti mosquito and so the spread of Dengue Fever.
