About Me

I am a biologist turned farmer. I found farming after years of trying to find a career that fit my environmentalist ethics and yearning to spend much of my time outdoors. I also love cooking good food and nourishing those around me, especially visitors. I can be fairly quiet, but I like getting to know new people and understanding new cultures. I also really enjoy conversation about science, nature, and generally understanding how the world works.

My husband, Nathanael, is also finding a life post-academia. He is a sociologist and studied political economy in graduate school. Now, he is an avid proponent of functional local economies, and he works at our local food co-op. We're starting a farm together this spring, and he'll be helping me out in the field in much of his free time! Nathanael loves reading about and discussing current events and world politics. He can also be on the quiet side, but he's a very warm and welcoming person.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Nathanael and I have had positive travel experiences staying with local people. We've mostly stayed with established friends, but we would like to broaden our circle of friends by meeting people through our travels. We have also moved quite a bit the past few years and this process would have been difficult without kind friends and strangers opening their homes to us. Since we recently bought a small house, we'd like to open it up to visitors and pay forward the kindness that we've been shown.

Interests

Outside of our more career oriented interests, Nathanael and I love hiking local trails, drinking good beer, and listening to good music. I am an avid cook and occasional baker. Nathanael is a record collector and lover of vehicles of all sorts (He used to have an awesome Vanagon that we would travel in!) Nathanael snowboards and we're both hoping to get into cross-country skiing this winter.

Music, Movies, and Books

We both like a wide variety of music, Nathanael's stem more from his punk-rocker days and mine are little more folksy. My favorite movie is Amelie, and Nathanael's is Children of Men. My favorite books are by Barbara Kingsolver and Margaret Atwood, while Nathanael's are anything related to Marxist theory.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Nathanael and I travelled to Switzerland two summers ago for our friend's wedding. The wedding weekend started with a hike up to a mountain hotel in the Alps and ended at a giant party in Zurich. We had a great time!

Teach, Learn, Share

I have lots of farming and homesteading skills to share with guests! I'm also always interested to learn more!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Nathanael and I can both share in good conversation! Nathanael also works at a small coffee roastery, so be prepared to be gifted good coffee too!
