About Me

A Canadian graduate student at UBC, doing an interdisciplinary Masters of Arts (mostly in sociology) researching masculinities and identity formation within social movements.

I enjoy traveling, though I haven't had the opportunity to do much of it yet (haven't even left North America yet). I usually dislike touristy stuff, unless: it's historically interesting, a good museum or an art gallery. I always want to find out where the locals eat, and go there; good food is a major travel priority for me. I also like cooking (I'd be happy to cook dinner for my host!), photography, rock climbing (though I'm crrently massively out of shape), political/philosophical discussion (particularly about topics related to gender, social movements/trends, epistemology, and postmodern theory), shopping for clothes I really can't afford, and sampling local whisky and ciders.

Also a bit introverted, but trying.

Also, I tend to overuse parentheses, if that wasn't plainly obvious at this point.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

- Hotels and resorts are boring, and I'd prefer to be as far away from them as possible.
- I'm not good at meeting people and this seems like a good way to do that (please tell me about all the best cheap restaurants around).
- I'm a poor student and traveling is expensive (particularly if I'm traveling for conferences).
- I'd really rather save the money I'd be spending on a hotel and spend it in local communities if possible.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once proposed, helped develop and establish a youth center in a remote indigenous community in Northern Canada, and trained it's first youth employee. It's still up and running, and the guy I trained is still running it! Working with the community in question was an incredible and rewarding experience.

Teach, Learn, Share

Let's see...

I am an MA student, with my research focusing on how individual and group identities develop in online social movements (mainly the far-right). I've taught a few lectures on this topic to university classes, and would be happy to talk, debate, or lecture with/at you about this subject and related things for as long as you'd like. I'm also pretty well versed in topics around: capitalism vs. marxism, masculinity and masculinity theory, postmodernism, social movements, online radicalization, the affects of digital communication on individuals, feminist theory, and lots of other things.

If this all sounds super heady and way too intellectual for you, I promise it's not. There is absolutely stuff in there you and I could have very interesting conversations about if you're interested. I can also not mention any of these things at all, if you'd like.

I think Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson are dinks, and would be happy to tell you why (if you don't know who these people are, please disregard).

I enjoy talking about these things with people who very much disagree with me/them (I'm pretty far-left leaning), and would be happy to have a thoughtful, respectful discussion about them with you. In person, mind. I don't usually discuss these things online, as a general rule.

What I Can Share with Hosts

- I'm a pretty good cook? If you have all the necessary equipment I can cook a good dinner and make Creme Brulee for dessert.
- I can maybe bring you some home-smoked pink salmon, or homemade sun-dried tomatoes, or whatever neat food project I've recently been working on, provided that: 1 - I remember. 2 - I can bring it across whatever borders I'm crossing. 3 - I actually have anything at the moment.
- I can always be a climbing partner with you. I can belay and climb both top rope and lead, though as I mentioned before, I am currently massively out of shape, and probably can't do anything much harder than a 5.9/5.10- myself right now.
