About Me

Peace and Love from out here on the road! I am a 22-year old Saxophone player, hitch hiker, bicyclist, and world traveler. I dropped out of music school in 2015 and have been out on the road ever since. They call me Tall Sam because I stand 6'7". I usually don't wear shoes, though I do carry flip flops around just in case, and I promise I won't track dirt in your house!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

A big part of the joy of traveling, for me, is meeting new people. I love sharing and listening to stories, trading ideas and opinions, and teaching and learning from people. That being said, I understand some peoples' need for space and solitude. I'm perfectly comfortable and happy sharing a silence with someone and doing my own thing; usually writing in one of my journals.

Music, Movies, and Books

Red Hot Chili Peppers! Stevie Wonder! The Grateful Dead! Anything with Dave Grohl! My favorite Sax players are Cannonball Adderly and Paul Desmond. My favorite smaller, current bands include the folk twang, harmony casting, beat boxing duo: Handmade Moments, a funk-muscle 3-piece from San Diego called King Taylor Project, and a Ska Punk Regge skank-fest from Dallas, Texas simply called Shaka.

I tend to read whatever novel finds its way into my possession. Authors I've enjoyed include Jack Kerouac, Tom Wolfe, Terry Pratchett, Italo Cosmo, Dr. Seuss... Maybe we can trade some books!

I'll watch a movie with you if you really want but I don't spend much time in front of screens these days. I've always enjoyed Quentin Tarantino.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've hopped an actual moving freight train! Barefoot! I got a good tip from some friends and made my way from Santa Barbara, all the way through LA to the town of Colton, CA. There I spent four days meeting hobos and learning the ropes before hopping a box car bound for Salt Lake City in broad daylight. One of the Bulls (railroad men who're supposed to pull us off the trains) found me and the guy I had hopped with, but he ended up letting us stay and bringing us a case of bottled water. We hopped off in Las Vegas and continued on our journey, eventually making it to Boulder, CO. There's nothing quite like the feeling of riding a box car across the desert like that.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm trying to get this done quickly because it's getting dark and I'm using the wifi at Taco Time so just suffice it to say that I make my living playing music, and I meditate and lucid dream a lot. If you want to know about any of those things, I'm your man. I'm also okay at writing so if you have a paper for school or a work email or a book you're working on and you want me to read it I'll be nice and helpful when I'm critiquing! But yeah, music especially. Let's jam.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Will play Sax for food! My family has Southern roots and they taught me good manners. I know my way around the kitchen and I'll wash the dishes if you don't mind me doing it. Like I said, I love sharing stories and getting to know you but you don't have to keep me entertained and I'm good at staying out of the way when it's appropriate. I have lots of good stories, I'm good with kids and animals, and I honestly might be just as comfortable on the floor in my sleeping bag as I would be in a bed with fresh sheets. Sleeping on the ground (and being considerably too tall for most couches or beds) kind of makes you appreciate a nice expanse of shag.
