I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii — camping, freediving, spearfishing, SCUBA diving, and performing in local theater. I have a bachelor’s degree in Acting and Psychology from Emerson College in Boston, and I studied in the master’s Counseling program at San Francisco State University. I’m a certified massage therapist and have a varied work background, as many former (failed) professional actors do. ;)

My home base is still San Francisco, where I’ve lived since 2007.

If you look at my photos (and at my profile gender — which I can’t seem to change), I’m sure you can tell I’m queer and transgender. If these things are new or uncomfortable for you, please read my statements at the bottom of this blurb.

I care deeply about building community, sharing resources, and contributing meaningfully to others’ lives. I value humility and curiosity, and I love learning from others and sharing what I know in return. I also believe every person has inherent worth and value. If these sentiments resonate with you, I feel confident we could have a meaningful connection.

I’d love to share a meal or two if that’s on the table (I’m happy to cook to your dietary specifications), but I’m also very respectful of your time and space — and will be busy exploring myself — so I don’t need much attention.

A note on queer and trans issues:

I was born female and now have medically transitioned to appear more physically masculine. I believe I have a balance of traditionally masculine and feminine traits, but don’t fit neatly in either box. I’m also just pretty relaxed about it, and don’t care what pronouns people use. Most folks use he/him at this point, but as long as you aren’t intending to be hurtful, I really don’t care what words you use.

1. If you’re uncomfortable with someone queer or trans staying in your home, please feel free to ignore any request to stay with you. It’s your house, and I want both of us to feel safe and comfortable.

2. If, however, you’re just unfamiliar with queer and transgender people, but not uncomfortable with me as a person staying in your home — that’s totally fine. If you’d prefer to leave these topics off the table, no problem. I’m sure we’ll have some overlapping interests and values to connect on. If you have questions you’d like to ask about this stuff, though, I’m your guy! I grew up in fairly extreme fundamentalist Christianity, and hating myself. It’s been a long jury to accept and understand myself. We all come from different backgrounds and exposures. I’m more than happy to share my experiences and knowledge with anyone who’s genuinely curious. I’ve sat on many panels in my life and am more comfortable than most people talking about sensitive topics respectfully and appropriately. You’d really have to go out of your way to offend me. I welcome curiosity or even confusion— I just won’t tolerate hate, or intentionally insulting or threatening behavior.

I'm the kind of person who's always looking for ways to share what I have, and so grateful when others feel the same way. I have jumped out of an airplane and scuba dove ship wrecks 100 ft below, and swam with sharks, dolphins, sea lions. I also have created and facilitated LGBTQ support groups, and donate my time to help people of all backgrounds find appropriate healthcare. Live theater, wild foraging, camping, and fishing are some of my favorite hobbies.

I have a rather strange and eclectic group of skills and areas I’d like to learn more about. I can spearfish and free-dive, and I know a lot about credit and the California community college system, and the rental market in the SF Bay Area. I can share tips on traveling in Hawaii Or the Bay. I have a few dishes I know how to cook well, but I’m always down to learn more in the kitchen. I love crafting and building things, but I’m not very skilled- would love to learn more. I have studied Spanish and ASL, but have a very long way to go before conversing would be possible. I love foraging and want to learn to hunt.

I always love a good conversation with people from various backgrounds. I am very open and east to talk to, and appreciate curiosity. I don’t get easily offended or judgmental of other’s beliefs and lives. I believe people can disagree deeply on things and still be kind and respectful to one another.
