About Me

Back home in Halifax for a few months. I grew up here across the harbour from the main downtown area in what used to be known as the City of Dartmouth, AKA the City of Lakes (Halifax is the City of Trees). I'm into music and art and dancing and film and cooking and acro and yoga and acroyoga and other stuff too. I'll be pretty busy this summer with various projects that I'm working on and with practicing trumpet but most of that is on my own schedule so I should have some time to show people around a bit.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Paying it forward and hoping to meet some awesome travellers. Especially excited to meet German speakers since it's the language I'm working on these days. I just (in May) got back from travelling in Europe for a few months; I spent a couple of months in Berlin while I was there. I didn't actually end up using CouchSurfing while I was travelling because it seemed to be too time-consuming to find places where I wasn't required to sleep naked in some guy's bed. But anyway I basically have a bunk bed setup here and you're quite welcome to be clothed while sleeping in the double-bed-sized loft while I sleep (clothed) underneath! You may end up sharing your bed with a preternaturally calm spayed short-haired female cat. Note that I'd have to clear your stay with flatmates but I think it would probably be okay.

Music, Movies, and Books

Hmm recently decided that Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin) is my favourite film ever and I could probably watch it every day. For series I'd probably pick Veronica Mars, though pretty much anything by Joss Whedon is up there too. Stranger Things is probably my top pick for current series.

Music: uhhhh how do you pick a favourite, um.. artist? song? album? genre? I'll go with a few albums from different genres. Nicolas Jaar: Nymphs; Arcade Fire: Funeral; Metallica: Master of Puppets; Kendrick Lamar: To Pimp a Butterfly; Freddie Hubbard: Red Clay; Nick Drake: Pink Moon; Portishead: Dummy

I don't really read fiction these days but I'll mention LotR, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and uhh man this is even more absurd. How do you pick your favourite books out of all the seminal, worldview-defining books you ever read? Catcher in the Rye, The Bell Jar, Fahrenheit 451, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. Also Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Man I didn't even hit the Beats (unless you count Kesey) or the Lost Generation. You see how hard this is?

You didn't ask, but Mexican food.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Went to Mali for a few months on an internship. I was teaching IT skills, like networking and web development. Mostly though i was just having an interesting time with the very engaging people there.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm happy to teach anybody some acroyoga if my back is feeling good. Otherwise ummm we can play some music or something. I have a banjo and sometimes a guitar as well as my trumpet and an Indian instrument called a shehnai that I don't know how to play in a manner that doesn't produce a sound like that of an injured sheep. Oh yeah I also speak French and obviously English and want to learn more German and practice Spanish (as well as French). I can teach you to write in run-on sentences in a stylistically appropriate way that your liberal English teacher will approve of.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Wait, I thought that was what the last blank was for. Uhh the aforementioned loft bed, delicious food that you can help me cook, a cozy flat in the heart of Halifax? Is that what you mean?
