One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was 17 (40ish yrs ago), I spent 3 weeks on a retired greyhound bus with 12 of my peers in an unusual senior year high school program that opened my white, rich b*tch eyes to the incredible diversity of experiences that is humanity in the US. This was essentially a 21-day couchsurfing event in a very progressive class led by a far-thinking teacher. She was the only chaperone and we were on our own 12 hours a day in the heart of this country's cities....in 1979, before anyone had cell phones. Us little sheltered suburbanites learned how to use public transportation in Chicago's Loop, navigate the boroughs of NYC, we met w/Rev. Jesse Jackson @ PUSH Coalition, ate soul food, slept in tents @ Kentucky Horse Park in the freezing cold, spent a week in Wash DC visiting the WH, House & Senate and our representatives, walked the Freedom Trail, ate at Tavern on the Green and generally criss-crossed the East Coast in one mega-learning event. There were weekly papers and presentations to be written and that led to public speaking events for me about the program and experience at a local college when I was 18. Host families across the country made this possible. God Bless Ms. Savoy, her program and all the families that took us in. This event has impacted my life more than any other, pretty much.
