About Me

I teach Art at my old high school in Gainesville, FL. I really like to eat. Food. Yay. Food. Food. Mm. Food.

I love simple things and I'm a generally quiet (in my past-times) person. I am a loud human being in that I play instruments and talk incessantly. I hardly drink, and I don't like large screaming crowds.

Also, I am laid forward, hard going, lukewarm, closed minded and hate traveling and meeting people from different cultures or learning new languages.

Music, Movies, and Books

Listening to a lot of Kyrgyz/Tuvan/Buryat/Mongolian music after going to Голос Кочевников and spending last summer mostly in Central Asia.

Hm, the easiest thing I can do here is plug my old bands. I should probably start a new one...

I've developed a habit of going to the local library and choosing six CDs that I know little about to listen to - usually from the "world" section. Otherwise, artists I've met or know through a friend: Plume Giant, Peter Hochstedler, Kina Grannis, etc. I also rather appreciate "classical" music having been a violinist most my life - mostly of the romantic variety - less the atonal or Handelish stuff.

Currently reading The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, need to restart อตีดอยู่ข้างหน้า อนาคตอยู่ข้างหลัง, and need to build up the discipline to read something in Russian. I enjoy fantasy and science fiction, and just finished Brent Weeks's Lightbringer Series (and was disappointed by its ending). I really enjoyed Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea cycle - an overlap of my two favourite leisure reading genres: children's literature and the above-mentioned scifi/fantasy. Bridge to Terabithia remains one of my favourite novels of all time. Jonathan Livingston Seagull is up there too. Oh yea, and Avi's Sometimes I Think I Hear My Name.

My favourite movie is probably 悲情城市. Then Enchanted/Stardust. Then My Neighbor Totoro/Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Somewhere down the line are movies like Ida, El Laberinto del Fauno, and Человек с киноаппаратом. And TV shows are easy. I watch few. Battlestar Galactica, Avatar the Last Airbender - in that order. I used to watch a lot of anime, too. So mostly older stuff like Bebop, Trigun, Slayers, Love Hina, KareKano, etc.

Nowadays this should be YouTube and streamers, shouldn't it? In that case: Smarter Every Day, Wintergatan, Rachel & Jun (and Jun's Kitchen), Igudesman and Joo, Cinema Wins, Door Monster, Geography Now, Nigahiga, Namewee, Viva La Dirt League.

I watch/listen to a lot of professional Starcraft 2. On drives to and from work I listen to a few podcasts - Omnivore (Thai), Witcast (Thai), Slow Russian, and The Pylon Show.
