About Me

It's been almost a year since I logged into this account. Feel great to rejoin the CS community, also feel that what I had written before for this profile was utter rubbish, so I rewrote everything. Old friends, time for you to discover something new in me and fall in love with me again!

I was born and raised in a city in Southeast China, neighboring Guangzhou in the north and Shenzhen in the south, harboring Hong Kong. When I was twenty, my third undergrad year, I joined an exchange programme to Cologne, Germany, and stayed there for a year. Twenty one, back to China and completed my degree, with a family trekking trip in Nepal in between. At the beginning of twenty two, found myself in Norwich, East England, wrestling with a writing programme here. Needless to say, I am very happy to be back in Europe (in the geographic sense) again. It has been a unique, fantastic experience to explore UK and revisit people and places I love in Germany/Europe at the same time. It feels like growing new shoots from the old soil, and I look forward to the curious plant it’s going to be.

I assume that not many people would be interested in visiting the small town Norwich. Regardless of the medieval brick houses, the narrow pavements made of primitive gray stones, and the vibrant landscape in the wild, it is quiet, slow, and not touristy at all. Perhaps that makes it the town full of writers and poets? Artsy feelings in the air, lots of stars at night, and we have exceedingly beautiful sunrise/sunset too, because of the unusually open sky here, so do come.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

It was a huge part of me in Germany/Europe. An epitome of the wanderlust, the tete a tete, the bright side of humanity. Had to take a year off because I wasn’t able to host people when I was back in China. Now it’s time to continue.

Interests

My interests are wide. I love knowing new things, or getting new perspective to see what I have already known. Science or history, everything is welcome. I also enjoy finding the connections between all those seemingly insignificant details. I believe many things are interrelated, and the degree of our exploration about them decides our understanding of life and universe.

There are a few things that I wish to get more professional. Trekking and boxing, for instance. Though I usually have to stay in, I am a very much outdoor person. If you happen to be sporty too, please do share some of your experience with me. It will be fascinating to hear.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music:
As long as it is not too loud.

Scandinavian /Japanese post-rock, the Weepies, Hurts, Damien Rice, Company, STRFKR, LANY, The Lemon Twigs, Meg Myers, The Smiths, Kate Bush

Despite the fact that I learned to play the piano for about five years when I was little, and am still playing, I wasn’t into classical music at all. However, recently its beauty caught my heart, maybe it is because I am older...Favorites are Chopin, Debussy, Beethoven, Ravel, and Tchaikovsky.

I love Spanish guitar and Brazilian dance music.

Sometimes (well, very often) I listen to some crappy pop music too :)

Movies:
I should watch more. Everyone else I met knows more about movies than me...

Back to Future trilogy
Patterson
400 Blows
Kes
Wild Strawberries
Bright Star
Fight Club
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Books:
How to Fall in Love (Cecelia Ahern)
The Perks of Being a Wall Flower (Steven Chbosky)
One Day (David Nicholls)
Lover's Discourse (Roland Barthes)
Persuasion (Jane Austin)
The Year of Magical Thinking (Joan Didion)
Arch of Triumph (E.M. Remarque)
Letters to a Young Poet (Rilke)
Life and Death in Shanghai (Nien Cheng, absolutely not my favorite, but this 600+ page memoir moved me to tears)

I also like the essays written in 1920-1940 in Chinese literature. As they always came as a collection I can't really pin down a book. But they are really one of the milestones that determined modern literature scene in China. If you happen to be interested in China or Chinese people, they are a must-read,

For old dead guys in our history, I love Li Po (Tang), Su Shi (Song), Xin Qi Ji (Song) and Yan Shu (Song).

More books to come. I would love to know what you like.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Chose to study in Germany when I was offered chances in UK, Denmark and US, simply because the tuition fees were covered by German government (such welfare is open to every undergrad in its country not just me), and the geographical location of Cologne is great. Literally heart of Continent, so I could go everywhere. It turns out to be deciding in many senses of the development of my life I suppose.

I wrote a romance-go-wrong story for my bachelor thesis, which led me to one of the coolest writing programmes in the world that I am currently staying.

Introduced to many new ideas/skills in 2017: Golfing, Archery, Pottery, Pencil painting, Trekking and Gliding in Nepal, Drum lessons, Fitness boxing training. I hope more to come in 2018 :)
