About Me

Can't host anyone over Carnival!

My name is Thales, I'm 23 years old and was born in Rio. Even though all my family is from here, that did not keep my parents from moving to a southern city called Joinville looking for better conditions to raise me and my siblings. Being so, I'm somewhere in between someone born in Rio and southern Brazil, both in personality and accent. After graduating from high school I moved back to Rio to attend medical school, and fell in love with the city I was born in. I've been living here for 5 years now, and in spite of feeling home, I know I have still got a lot to see and learn about the Wonderful City.

Preparing myself for my next exchange, a 4 month internship in Portugal which I'm attending to with my flatmates!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

For the last 3 years I spent a lot of time taking exchange programs to wherever I could, having lived in Scotland, Chile and Cuba for differente periods of time. Living in Scotland was my first experience in a long-term exchange back in 2014. I spent a year there as an exchange student of Neuroscience at the University of Dundee. During that period I had the chance to travel all around Europe and know all types of places, people and cultures. Brazil is not the safest place on Earth, and the idea of opening my house to a stranger did not always seem reasonable. However, while living in Scotland I was welcomed uncountable times into stranger's house who later turned into close friends that I feel it's time to give some of this trust and kindness back, even if to someone else. In 2016 I had the opportunity to spend some time in Chile, and then on January 2017 I had the opportunity to take a public health internship in Cuba, which I cannot describe how much it changed my life. I now live with friends of mine in a 3-bedroom apartment, but we have a pretty decent sofa that we are willing to lend to people needing a place to crash! Everyone should be able to get to know and be impressed by Rio's culture and scenery :)

Interests

I'm the definition of an easygoing person and will talk about pretty much anything, really. Even though I lack the time to read about other subjects, I enjoy hearing about things out of my comfort zone, whether it's about your travels, architecture, or how you think Rio is the best place on Earth.......
As a stereotypical Brazilian I'm really into football, but also like most of other sports and martial arts. I also play the guitar and am trying to learn piano and harmonica (not doing so well at it though), so if you play any of those you'll have what to do when inside the house! Love to try different beers and go out both at night and during the day!
