Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: My favorite directors are Shane Carruth, Akira Kurosawa, Stanley Kubrick, Stan Brakhage, Andrei Tarkovsky, Terence Malick, David Lynch, and Hiroshi Teshigahara. I like "art films", ambitious films, and films that surprise and transport me. Some other favorites: For All Mankind, Primer, My Neighbor Totoro, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dark Days, and Wings of Desire.

Music: I listen to a lot of music, and I love to talk about music with people. I love experimental and unusual music of all kinds - gamelan folk music from Bali, ambient electronic, noise, some modern American folk, modern classical, classic Davis/Coltrane jazz, hip-hop, indie rock, and anything that makes you stop what you are doing and listen closely.

Books - I have a list of "books to read", and I always add far more than I cross off. I love the Tao te Ching, Walt Whitman, Borges, Joyce, the graphic novelist Chris Ware, classic science fiction, and everything my friends write. I also love the original "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Got to know my father. :-)

While sailing around a 60-mile water-filled meteor crater in northern central Canada.
