About Me

Hi there! My name is Tom and I am from Brighton, UK. I love my home city because of the open mindedness of most people and the amount of young people that give it its energetic and artistic vibe. Also living by the sea is absolutely great! My friends would describe me as a very laid back person who just tends to go with the flow. I have recently discovered a real love for travel and meeting people from different places after travelling around South America in 2019. I fell in love with the warmth Latin Americans and their unending generosity and I met so many open and genuinely kind people. After this experience I am now fascinated by the cultural differences between England and other places and this is now one of my favourite topics of conversation! Before this I had always been a very open person but I feel this has now been taken to a new level due to my experiences.

After finishing school I graduated with a BA in Geography from Newcastle University which was a fantastic 3 years! This included lots of cheap nights out and a field trip to Hong Kong in my second year! Since then I have completed 2 summers at Camp America in New York and in between this I worked with disabled people to save money for travelling to South America. This was a great experience and I would love to build on this and base my future career on helping people by working for an NGO in developing countries or something similar.

In general I try to live a very healthy lifestyle - I love to keep active and always love to be doing something whether it is Swimming, football, Running, Cycling, hiking or playing tennis! I am also a Vegetarian but ofcourse I don't mind if you eat meat as I used to myself! I also try to live a fairly frugal life and don't like to spend too much money on material things and have recently given away a lot of the things I used to own to charity. I also love to try and make sure I'm free to see my friends as much as possible and go for a few drinks!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I first joined couchsurfing half way through a trip to South America in October 2019. Originally I was sceptical about meeting strangers but I thought I would give it a try as I wanted to meet more locals in the countries I was visiting. This turned out to be an amazing decision! I loved the opportunity it gave me to meet more local people and fall right into local the culture. One of the main things I have really enjoyed is how much I trust the people I am meeting up with and the mutual desire to connect. I have been truly humbled by the huge generosity people have shown to try and make my travelling experiences as enjoyable as possible and it's now made me want to put other people first more than ever before. This is why I would love to begin hosting people and continue the adventure of connecting with people through Couchsurfing!

Interests

I am super sporty and I love anything cardio related because it makes me feel great physically and mentally. I am also a HUGE dance music fan and love going to a rave every now and then! I am always looking to try something new and have recently made a much bigger effort to read more whilst I am also trying to carry on learning Spanish after South America
