I’m Tom and at this time of my life I can truly say “The Earth is my home” as I retired in 2019, gave away almost all of my possessions, and have been traveling since then. So far that has involved walking 1200 km of the Camino de Santiago in France and Spain, a month in Germany, 5 months in Oaxaca, Mexico, 3 months in Guatemala, and some odd bits of time with family in Portland, OR. During this time I have stayed in hotels, motels, hostels, with family, with friends—on new foam mattresses, in a tent, in albergues in Spain in a room with 100 of my closest friends (!), on the floor, and I did put my foot down once in Bilbao, Spain where my Couchsurfing host wanted me to sleep with him in his bed!! It’s been an adventure and each night of this journey has been a blessing.

Right now I’m getting ready to hop on my bicycle and head south.. and further and further south. Slowly through Mexico, Central America, and to Colombia .

I’m looking forward to meeting new friends along the way. For the 3 years prior to retiring I was an Airbnb host and truly loved that. You can see my listing and read the reviews if you Google: Peace and Quiet in Mt Shasta City.

I’ve lived in Mexico for much of the past 2 years. I’m a volunteer for a dog rescue organization, something very near and dear to my heart.

I’m neat and tidy (please don’t ask my ex-wife to confirm that!), grateful, open-minded, and look forward to hearing your story. After pedaling 50-60 miles that day I can’t guarantee wakefulness after about 8 pm. I am grateful to refill my water bottles and for any crumbs of any food that happen to fall my way.

Just to note here I put in one request at a time. If I hear nothing in 24 hours I may put in a request somewhere else. In the case of a tie, the first response I receive wins me as the big prize!!!!! haha

我为什么加入 Couchsurfing

Well, because I love meeting new friends, having new experiences—-and because I’m a tightwad these days taking an early retirement and traveling on a shoestring! Staying in peoples homes is always preferable for me than anything else. PS— my secret reason for Couchsurfing is that I want to meet your pets!

Eclectic taste. Favorite music is classical and favorite classical is baroque choral music with authentic instruments. On my bike I listen to podcasts and all kinds of rock.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

My first ever bike tour was in 2009 as I rode my racing bike with skinny tires all over the island of Tasmania with a backpack on my back. The first day was about 100 miles on the hottest day ever on record. I had no sleeping bag or tent but just had (naive) faith that it would all work out and it did. That night I met people who continue now as some of my dearest friends. Since then I have learned the phrase:Trust God but make reservations!!
