About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Enjoy the world around me

ABOUT ME

I think traveling makes for great stories, and I love great stories. I am a very curious and sometimes whimsical person, but I also really like lists and staying organized. I have a dry sense of humor that also really likes doing impersonations of people.

Through journal keeping and documents, I've recorded years of thought and travel. Maybe a little too much thought.

I observe first, then go for it. I'm always working to reverse that.

I'm an INTJ on the Myer's Briggs personality test.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe you never stop learning about yourself. Traveling can introduce you to different cultures and peoples, but it really lets you discover more things about yourself.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

If you ever have a chance to visit Charleston, I'm willing to move my tour guide duties beyond the campus of the College of Charleston. I used to do restaurant reviews for the school newspaper, so I'd like to think I've become a walking directory of Charleston's best. Even though I'm definitely a Yankee, I have grown to love Southern cooking, from grits to chicken pot pie. If you want a lesson in hosting the Southern way, I'm more than willing to share. Charleston is also a big arts town, from the galleries to the architecture. I'm also an unashamed geek about it.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm very new to the CouchSurfing program, but I've been traveling a lot lately and meeting all kinds of new people. I have no qualms about talking to strangers.

Interests

I love cooking, learning about local foods, journaling, and reading anything. If I have the time and supplies, painting is one of my favorite hobbies. I also like photography, collaging, baseball, swimming, instruments, and science. I like learning about animals, architects, and dead Presidents.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like recorded music just as much as live music: The Beatles, Ryan Adams, The Stone Roses, Gorillaz, Wilco. But any live jazz concert (or bossanova) is something I'll definitely go after. I love reading anything I can get, especially features magazines (The New Yorker, Bon Appétit, National Geographic),graphic novels, any cookbook by Thomas Keller (but other cookbooks too), The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet, The Life of Pi, The Great Gatsby. My brother and I are the biggest movie buffs with each other: Rushmore, Better Off Dead, Some Like It Hot, Ratatouille.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The mountains in Northwestern Argentina were pretty awe-inspiring to me. There's so much variety with the country up there-from colored rocks and cactus to fog-covered forested mountains.
There's one restaurant by me in Charleston called McCrady's. Every time I've gone, I've always stumbled away saying "Wow." The food there is like science, but sometimes so simple and so beautiful.
During a backpacking trip to Mt. Rogers, Virginia with friends, we had been hiking for a while in the woods, when we got into a clearing. The country is so clear of pollution, and I had never seen so many stars before. It was like a blanket had been lifted up.

Teach, Learn, Share

You are your most important teacher. You give lessons you can't escape from. Being independent and able to take notice of the world around me as well as how I fit into it is how I've been able to grow. If anything, I'd like to be able to teach how to find what anchors your life. Sometimes, that might be through a little wandering.
