ABOUT ME

"Just some another cool guy" (sic). I've recently "finished" my studies and am now persuing further formal education in a Ph.D/a career of life long learning (see what I did there?). My love of learning is not just academic... I love learning about other people, other lands and other points of view. Keeping with this theme... I particuarly love enjoying craft beers, local wines, coffees, cheese, native fruits and pretty anything else that is potential edible that I haven't tried before. On these topics, I have a lot to share in terms of knowledge, experiences and talents :) When I CouchSurf I like cook with and/or for my hosts, likewise when I have people stay with me. I believe there is no better way to connect with other people than through food!

PHILOSOPHY

Do something else.

(Really... just forget about what you're doing, and do something else.)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Hosting. Surfing. Attending meet ups!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've hosted all sorts of interesting folk on an almost weekly basis for the last few years. I've also travelled to places all across Europe and Asia, couchsurfing the whole way, and most recently 2013 completed a rail journey across the USA, couchsurfing in every city along the way. Couchsurfing for me has really been a life changing experience. Let's be very frank: the fact that it is "free accommodation" is a big part of it, and it is the real answer to all my non-CS friends/family's questions of "how do you manage to travel the world so much?! you've never held a fulltime job!". But as we all know, couchsurfing is a hell of a lot more than just saving some cash... it is entails a particular world view made up of sharing, compassion and a love of very real human experiences. After my first overseas trip I wanted to visit all the big landmarks, buy all the souvenirs and just generally tick off the pre-planned "to do list" of every city of the world. After a while, I found that this wasn't very ambitious, and definitely not cheap! Spending a lot of cash and waiting for hours to visit the top of the Eiffel Tower was great, don't get me wrong, but climbing to my couchhosts favourite hilltop park to enjoy his grandparents home made wine was priceless. Finding whale bones washed up on the beach at my hosts farm is not part of the normal "mega tour". Being given a good heads up on the best sandwich in the borough simply is just not found in any tourist guidebook. Finally, just being welcomed into someone's home with pure hospitality is just something money simply and categorically can not buy.

I still want to visit every city in the world, but more than anything, I want to get to know its people, feel its pulse and understand why that place is special. This doesn't cost me a dime, but it does cost me a wealth of human experience that I'm more than willing to share. So, please let me stay with you! You're by all means welcome at my place, too :)

Music, Movies, and Books

I enjoy independent films and stories about peoples lives. But sometimes I just like to go the cinema and zone out to whatever is showing on the silver screen that day. I'm also a sucker for cat videos, fail/win compilations and road rage videos. Addendum: I've recently taken a liking to those "BORDER SECURITY" shows, you know... where they grill people coming through customs. So noir.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The people of the world: you constantly amaze me. You are natures most peculiar thing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm a bit of a coffee geek with a lot to share, but also a lot to learn. Single origin? Alternative brew methods? Yep, that's me. I'm also very much into homebrew beer, making curry spice mixes (which I often carry with me when travelling, you know... for those emergency curry situations). My actual "real person" job is teaching business research methods at a university, so I guess I could give you some help with your homework if you really need it :/
