About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My mission is to make the most delicious salad the world has ever tasted. Seriously! It's a worthy goal that doesn't harm anyone. I have a long, long way to go. Another one is to make this a better world. That might harm a fair few people though.

ABOUT ME

I wrap my core of shyness in furs of outward wander and interest. I then take the resulting fluffy ball and roll it down hills and see where it lands. It rolls into a puddle sometimes, and then it's stuck.

Bit more sane perhaps: I, eh.., *edges to the microphone; taps it. Microphone makes loud scream* .., well all seemed fine with my life until I went to Sweden for love, just after finishing with college. After that I've mainly been busy fighting with the steering wheel. Some years in Sweden, some years in Nepal, a year all over the place, and now I'm a tired old boozer in Zurich. Cranky and complaining about the good old days. I rattle on the inside of the iron bars that protect my home when someone passes it on the street. Then I scream: "Hoodlum! You'll never get my gold. It's in my wisdom tooth, and I'll bite your finger when you try and get it." That usually scares 'em right off!

PHILOSOPHY

What! Really! Just one go at this life thing! Who made up that rule? Well ok, but it's awfully harsh if you ask me.

*puts on party hat*
*discovers it doesn't fit cause of really big head*
*takes it off again*

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I would like to service people with a nice fluffy couch. Actually I bought a mattress at Ikea to make em more comfy, but I never seem to have time for actual surfers. Also I would like to put my bum on other people's couches. And have some fun with like-minded minds. And hearts.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm pretty much a couchsurfing newbie. Went to a couchsurfing meeting in the brooding cs-hotspot of Zurich. For about 10 minutes. And walked away with an excellent contact. CS'sers rule is my conclusion. Might need more sample-data.

That was then. Now, two weeks later, I'm turning on the screws on th this Couchsurfing thing. Zurich is really extremely active CS-wise and there's always lots to do. Kinda drowning in activities. Will soon be overworked.

A bit later: Ok, so I am not exactly overworked. I hang around at movie-nights and poker nights. It's all good. Not super active. Just, you know, have it on the by-by, this CouchSurfing thing. No need to go all crazy on it. It has it's place. Next to the slippers.

Interests

Playing guitar when having a hangover, programming, politicizing, arguing, agreeing, the brain, running long distances, experiencing that lovely feeling just after running (is that an interest?), writing derailing monographs, feeling content.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: de Poolse bruid, Pulp Fiction of course, and that other one, Trainspotting. Also Magnolia, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Star Wars trilogy (there's another one?), the Tolkien stuff, that Balkan movie I once saw about a wedding, Almodovar stuff, Lynch stuff, Paul Thomas Anderson stuff, etc..

Music: Ani DiFranco, dEUS, Tool, Feist, Frank Zappa, Timbuktu, Pearl Jam, Truckfighters, Radiohead, Portishead, Zita Swoon, Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung, Squarepusher, Pink Floyd, Kyuss, Moloko, Motorpsycho, Jenny Wilson, the Mars Volta, Janis Ian, Sonic Youth, etc..

Books: Godel, Escher, Bach. The Age of [revolution, capital, extremes, empire] contemp history 4-some of Hobsbawm, A People's History of the United States, anything on the brain, like The Co-evolution of Language and The Brain or The Quest for Conciousness, a Neurobiological Approach. Stuff on politics, like the Prophet trilogy on Trotsky. Also CS books like Paradigms in Artificial Intelligence Programming, etc..

More fictiony: the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy books, Tolkien stuff, the Master and the Margarita, the Picture of Dorian Gray, some from Greg Egan, Foucault's Pendulum, Snuf en de verborgen schat, Erik of het kleine insecten boek, Das Parfum, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, On the Road, The Death of Vishnu, etc..

I like books. And reading them too. And I don't want too lecture too much, but try not to keep them hostage. Try to let them go and let them flutter to other people; however hard that might be.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've seen a concert of Ani DiFranco. And she was even more fantastic than on mp3. Perhaps that was just because I wore out those mp3's so much. She was just standing there on stage by herself, with nothing but her guitar and her voice and herself. And she pretty much blew us away with her warmth and her passion. We should allow cloning just for her. Make a few thousand of her and the world will be well.

Teach, Learn, Share

Wanna learn Common Lisp? Or another branch of the lisp family? Or Smalltalk or Forth, or any other strange computer language? Let's get together and see how far we can come.

As for human languages, I love to speak Swedish, and do it almost never. Or I can help improve the hard edges around your Dutch.

I myself would like to know more about vegetarian and vegan cooking. And about FPGA's and mechanics; the real-world stuff that chips and memory are attached to and that can actually interact in this world. And I wanna become better at maths; specifically calculus atm. As well as macro-economics and political theory; Marxist or other.

Countries I’ve Visited

Armenia, Austria, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Jordan, Macedonia, Morocco, Nigeria, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United States

Countries I’ve Lived In
