About Me

CURRENT MISSION

here to help, here for help.

ABOUT ME

Mostly music.
I'm silly. Sad yet sunny. And sometimes snobby, although I believe in total freedom of the mind.
I love to travel. I love new sensations and new sounds, though I often hover at the edge of understanding. My heart beats a bit too fast and my mind reels. I sing all the time, often without realizing. I'm kind of quiet - at first.

I adapt.

Maybe I should add: the USA is a monster - a deceitful ruiner of so much within and especially beyond its borders - that is certainly to be feared, resisted, and fought. But beyond its greed, policies and politics, it is a large, beautiful space with varied landscapes and geographies, with many amazing communities and people. I've traveled through every state in the States, and I'd love to talk to you of my home if you'd like to share about yours.

PHILOSOPHY

tears of joy.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm unemployed and having no luck finding work in work-starved Portland, so I'm figuring a good way to spend my obscene amount of free time would be to either show folks around Portland, or go traveling the cheapest way possible.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

brand new to CouchSurfing, but lots of experience couch surfing....I've been on tour a bunch of times, so couches and floors feel like home.

Interests

good music, large feasts, language, the ocean, weird words, weirder worlds, tea, books, bike rides, folklore, science fiction. Making things.

Music, Movies, and Books

Miles Davis, Leonard Cohen, MF Doom, Arvo Part, Neutral Milk Hotel, Will Oldham/Palace, Negativland, Lightning Bolt, Congotronics, Arthur Russell, Nina Simone, Crass, Neil Young, This Heat, Bob Dylan, Animal Collective, Neurosis, Erik Satie, Wu Tang, and all my friends bands.
Lots of funk and hip-hop. Jazz (all and every style) and contemporary classical, and almost anything from Sublime Frequencies and Mississippi Records. I'm especially interested in traditional/folk music from Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Please tell me about music I should hear!

The books list is long and varied, but I especially love Russian and Polish sci-fi, American authors like John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy, and contemporary women like Alice Munro and Grace Paley. Longtime favorites: Knut Hamsun, Paul Bowles, Jose Saramago, JG Ballard, Vonnegut, G G Marquez, Italo Calvino. I love nonfiction and I read too much poetry, especially contemporary American poets, and Lorca. Philip K Dick and Richard Brautigan meant a lot to me growing up.

My favorite movies are ones made by Bergman, Hervog, Wenders, Jarmusch, the Coen Brothers, and Kustarica. I like Wes Anderson and John Carpenter, and I love "Alien".

**** I <3 Carl Sagan and Joseph Campbell ****

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I battled for coconuts in front of a giant shipwreck.
