Overview
About Me
Hi folks! I'm a Californian expat living in Tokyo enjoying this fantastic city while teaching science and English.
I have grown up on a healthy diet of camping, backpacking, roadtrips, and traveling. Love the outdoors, but eager to wander alleyways. I'm a tireless science educator and environmental enthusiast. My driving philosophy is that "education is activism and vice versa." We can all learn from each other.
Between teaching, I'm either planning the next adventure, exploring the city, staring at my aquarium, or out on a hike. Might even pick up my ukulele or play a video game from time to time. Also, I do love a good game of Magic, so if you've got a deck, bring it along!
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I want to meet all kinds of people, go to new places, and have unique experiences. Learning about local folklore is one of my favorite parts of traveling and the best way to do that is over a great meal with new friends to laugh with.
Couchsurfing seems like a wonderful way to build an international community of friends through shared experiences. Why stay in a hotel when you can stay with locals?
All you strangers are just friends I haven't met yet!
Interests
Outside, I'm a nature boy - grew up in the Sierra Nevada and by the sea with my old hippie parents. I'm studying biology and teach science so you can bet I love to talk about flora and fauna.
Inside, I'm a nerdy guy - I love a good board or card game! Animation is one of my favorite things and kicking back with a good film is the best way to end a day.
Music, Movies, and Books
Favorite Music: All kinds, always changing... Right now I'm really into Vaporwave / Future Funk, but I can headbang to Slayer anyday
Favorite Movie of all time: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Books: The Hobbit / Lord of the Rings, Atlas Obscura, field guides
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Built a 14ft tall puppet costume of the robot from Castle in the Sky with my friends. (pic in my photos)
Teach, Learn, Share
Did you know that sea cucumbers can eject their innards in times of stress? They basically blast out all of their digestive tract in order to distract predators while they make a tube-footed getaway. They eventually completely regenerate their lost organs and make a full recovery.
Yeah okay, nasty.
But that's life! In all it's glorious nastiness.
