Overview
About Me
I am alternately shy and gregarious, which can be slightly disorienting, but I mostly really love human interaction. I am working on a master's thesis about hitchhiking, largely because I feel so fascinated by the stories and interactions that emerge from the meeting of strangers.
I love studying folklore, playing musical instruments, reading, writing, and learning about plants.
I study folklore because at heart, I am a romantic, and I idealize olden traditions and ways of knowing, but also because I am pretty worried about the future.
I'm happiest in the woods.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I have couchsurfed and hosted couchsurfers in the past, but these days I live in a full house with four other roommates, and we're generally not hosting couchsurfers at this time.

Music, Movies, and Books
Musicwise, I love Joanna Newsom, Richard Laviolette, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, The Weather Station, Joni Mitchell, Timber Timbre, Chilly Gonzales, Tin Hat Trio, Debussy, Townes Van Zandt, Tune-Yards, David Bowie, The Smiths, Stereolab, Belle & Sebastian, the list continues, of course...
I used to work at a wonderful used bookstore, so my room is filled with many, many books. I love Alice Munro, Lorrie Moore, Tove Jansson, David Foster Wallace, and Sheila Heti, among others.
I don't watch too many movies, but I recently saw and loved Rivers and Tides, and the Nina Simone documentary on netflix.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
This summer, a driver picked a friend and I up hitchhiking in Cape Breton, and after one thing led to another, we ended up joining a group of Buddhist monks for their annual lobster release (everyone boards a boat, and heaves over 100 lobsters back to the sea.) It was so serendipitous and magical...
My three weeks wwoofing in a Finnish eco-village were also transformative!
Teach, Learn, Share
I can show you a little piano, guitar, ukulele, or banjo... we can cook together, or traipse around the Newfoundland wilderness (it's not so far away from St. John's!)
What I Can Share with Hosts
We have a couch and a crowded little nook on the third floor. Our house is filled with things, and in our living room, you may fall asleep beside three hobby horses, a piano, a (fake) anvil wreathed in Christmas lights, and many decorations from parties past and present. But we mostly find it cozy!
