I'm a 22-year old Dutch guy who has been lucky enough to spend a lot of time living, studying and travelling abroad over the past few years.

I love the sense of adventure that travel brings, going new places and trying new things, and I'm always itching to get away from the flat Dutch landscape and into some more varied scenery.

I tend to go to a new country with a vague idea of what I'd like to see or do, and make the rest up as I go along. I especially love meeting other people who recommend nearby places or activities they really like, especially if we end up travelling together for a while; these unexpected detours are always among the highlights of any trip or stay!

After hearing so many good things about Couchsurfing, and accidentally hosting a German couple in Istanbul once, I would love to try it myself!

I always enjoy meeting people who are passionate about their interests or surroundings, and Couchsurfing seems like a great way to meet friendly and interesting people and to learn about their city and country.

At the moment I am back in my sleepy boring hometown, but if the next few months go well I'll be moving to a much more interesting city very soon, and I'd love to host people and hear there stories when I get the chance.

I also love to try every kind of food I can get my hands on, and trying all the local food is always an important part of any trip I make. Street food is a particular weakness of mine, and I always spend the first months after a long trip losing weight!

I like many different genres of music, but some of my favourite artists are Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Refused, Buddy Rich, Arctic Monkeys, MF Doom, A Tribe Called Quest, Led Zeppelin, Yawning Man, The Clash, Stoned Jesus, Red Fang.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of The Physics House Band, That Handsome Devil and Miles Davis.

I like both literary- and genre fiction.
Some books I read recently and really loved are Mirrors of the Unseen by Jason Eliott (a very passionate book on art, people and travel in Iran), Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (a gripping fantasy series on a grand scale) and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (a beautifully written glimpse into the mind of a very troubled man).

I also really enjoy just about any book Brandon Sanderson writes, I wish I had half the imagination that man has!

I'll put something amazingly stupid instead, as people always enjoy a good bit of schadenfreude.

When studying in Istanbul I got a bit too drunk at a Jack White concert near the edge of town, and (trying to find my way home) drunkenly stumbled into a military training zone, where I was promptly arrested at gunpoint, brought to some kind of office, and questioned by some Turkish soldiers speaking broken German and English.

After they checked my phone for pictures and got my student card and residence permit from my wallet things calmed down very quickly, and my strange and stupid situation amused all the soldiers greatly! They treated me very nicely, and we shared many cups of tea while handling all the formalities. They later handed me over to the police, who brought me to the station where I had to sign a few things I couldn't read (not understanding Turkish and all that), and sent me on my way with a friendly warning.
