About Me

Where to begin....well, I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. It has a bad rap (DEADmonton etc.), but I've really grown fond of it over time. There is blossoming art scene (even though it is hindered in someways), fun and welcoming people, and our beautiful rivervalley (biggest green space in North America!).

I've had a few international travel experiences - I've been to Spain (I was a kid :P), to Germany for an exchange trip while in junior high, and Costa Rica for a vacation a couple years back. In between those trips I have worked several different jobs ranging from serving at restaurants to working in pipefitting, gone to university to study Journalism, and traveled around my own beautiful country (mainly B.C.).

Currently, I am taking some time off from my studies to consider other options and get out and see the world. I've been really feeling music as part of my life path and am looking to explore it. I play guitar mainly, but I can play bass, drums and other instruments - I am no virtuoso, but I do well enough in random jam sessions. I've also been fiddling with music production and electronic music.

If there is one characteristic that I would and my friends would use to describe me as chill. I'm like water. I go with the flow pretty easily and I am down for almost anything. Sometimes it's a little difficult to get myself out of my comfort zone, but I am not too hard to convince. This year I am especially focused on expanding my borders, getting out of routine, exploring new options and worlds and meeting people that I share a connection with.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As I mentioned above, I went on a German exchange trip in junior high, where I got to live with a family and go to school with the students there. This was an unforgettable time in my life. To this day I believe this is one of the best ways to travel because of how quickly you absorb a culture and learn a new language, which is something I think is being replicated through Couchsurfing.

Interests

In no particular order: Music (playing & listening), working with video, writing, reading, going to shows, philosophy, psychology, chemistry (especially in the body), soccer, going out with friends, meeting new people, travel (obviously)

In no way is this list exhaustive. Always set on exploring new things and getting all the experiences I can out of life!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music:
Always changing with the ebb & flow of life, but I can appreciate all kinds of music.
Some of my fave genres (and some artists) are chill wave (Washed Out, Neon Indian, Small Black, Millionyoung), shoegaze and dream pop (Tamaryn, Mood Rings, M83, Cocteau Twin), RetroSynth (Anoraak, FM Attack), Synthpop and New Wave (Joy Division, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure, Part-Time, Talking Heads), Rock (The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin)....I'm getting carried away. There's just waaaaayy too much out there (yet never enough!).

Movies:
Basically all Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino films; Ex Machina; District 9; Her; The Professional, Fight Club, It Follows (mostly for its soundtrack :p); The Big Lebowski; The Lego Movie; Zoolander; The Last Samurai; Planes, Trains, and Automobiles; Man On Fire

Books:
The Great Gatsby, Siddhartha, Shantaram....
I should probably read more.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Snuck into some music festivals in B.C. the past couple summers - one was a major stealth mission. Ended up being spotted but escaped and danced my butt off for the rest of the night!

Teach, Learn, Share

I could teach you to play the guitar (and some music theory if you're up for it!).
I also studied journalism and online communication, so I could show you what I learned about that field and show what I've learned about writing.

I'm sure there's a lot more I could teach you, and there are lots of things you could teach me! My philosophy is we can always learn something from someone else as long as you're open and humble.
