About Me

I've been travelling through South America for over a year. I've couch surfed a fair bit in Colombia with other people and now I have the opportunity to provide some hospitality myself. I'm being lent a small house in little Colombian mountain town by some new friends I have made. We are talking about starting a hostel on a farm outside town and hosting couchsurfers is a way of testing the idea out.

My idea for this space is that it is a place to relax, experience nature, grow food, learn Spanish, make music and follow other creative pursuits in a positive, creative and supportive environment.

Couch surfers that are keen to get involved in the kitchen, helping me fix up the house, in adventures, playing guitar with me (I'm pretty novice) or in helping with the free "English Club" English lesson that I've started in the local town are especially welcome.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Lo siento, eso es viajo y en ingles! Aprendiendo una otra idioma es algo especial para mi.

Yesterday, I went with a friend out along a rock shelf at the edge of a beach. The rock shelf was flat and a couple of meters above the level of the sea. In places it had cracks and gulches through which the ocean pulsed. It jutted out into ocean with a little tower of rock at the very end. We headed out without really thinking, we are adventurous sorts. Big waves were rolling into the beach, smashing into the rock shelf and at times sweeping right across the the top of the rocks. We ran out along the shelf, massive waves crashing either side and sending spray way up in the air over our heads. We had to time our advances between the big sets of waves to avoid getting swept away. We jumped over high gulches of rushing water hurrying to reach the next high point before the next big wave crashed over where we were. One particularly big gulch was several meters wide and had a very old rusted iron bridge built over it, perhaps for loading ships of the rock shelf in the old days before there was a road to this area. We crawled over an old rusted broken down bridge keeping an an eye on the incoming waves. At this point we had nearly reached the end of the rock shelf and the pinnacle of rock at it's end. The last part of the shelf was particularly low and constantly swept by waves covering it in a foot or more of rushing water. Easily enough to dangerously sweep us off our feet and off the rocks. We waited and when we had our chance and the water subsided ran out to the very end of the shelf to the small 3m tall pinnacle of rock sticking up at right at the end of the rocks confronting the onslaught of the ocean wave after wave crashing straight into it. During a pause in the sets of big waves we ran out and desperately scrambled up the slightly overhanging sides of the rock. It wasn't easy to climb and as we searched for hand holds to pull ourselves up the next set of big waves started to loom up in front of us. On top it was only just big enough for us to huddle there and cling on. We didn't have to wait long until the next set of massive waves came through and we were stuck there water rushing around us and over the rocks behind us. The rock behind us was awash with white water. The waves loomed terrifyingly up in front of us, making us wonder if we would be swept of our little pinnacle. Some really huge waves rose up out of the ocean. We were stuck there on top of that little rock right in front of them unable to do anything. We searched out the best handholds we could find on the rock and hunkered down, gripping on tight ready for water to pound into us and to try to hold on to stop us being washed off and smashed into the rocks below. When the first big wave crashed against the pinnacle of rock I held my breath in terror, gripping tightly to the rock. The water rushed up on either side of us with heaps of force, and shot straight up in the air forming two terrifying walls of water surrounding us. Miraculously because of the shape of the rock the water was directed away from us. We didn't even get wet. When the set of big waves passed we scrambled quickly down the rock and made our escape hurrying back across the rock platform, over the bridge and back to safety. I've spent heaps of time in the outdoors, floating down rivers and climbing round on rough pacific shorelines but there was something surreal about this experience. It was so scary, and potentially dangerous, with water rushing everywhere, yet after our adventure we were still dry, like an indiana jones movie or a disneyland ride.
