Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is always fully of amazing surprises. It is one of the best things about travelling...

I agree with the simple and honest ideals behind couchsurfing for a long time. Exploring new places is the thrill of travelling for me. Chatting with fellow travellers is part of the joy of exploring, but it is by sharing time with someone who lives there that one really gets the most of a visit.

Nobody knows the little stories and myths about 'this back street' or 'that old building' like a local!

Strike up a conversation with the old man sitting on the bench with his stick and before long one has a unique perspective of a city's proudest moments or a darker chapter that you won't find in the guide book.

It's the couple who live in the flat above the bakery who know where the best place in town to find Banoffee pie.

It’s the poet who can share with you her favourite willow tree by the bend in the river, or the ‘young professionals’ who know the trendiest bars in town.

Having a chat with a local changes the tempo of your day and leads onto new topics of conversation. It isn't always easy to strike up the first conversation, and this is where couchsurfing helps us make that first contact.

Thank you Couchsurfing community!

Interests

I'm a bit of a history buff. While strolling through the streets or paths of a place I like to wonder what it was like in times gone by. There is always a story to be heard in the architecture of a place and it is one of travellings great pleasures to inturperate how the people who lived there wanted to be perceived and how this perception may have changed over time.

When not staring up at castle parapets I am quite a sociable guy. Having a laugh and a drink or two with new friends, tasting exciting foods, listening to different music and exchanging stories with people are my favourite past times. This is what life is all about.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm a big fan of the movies but hopeless with actors and directors names.

Proud owner of a bookshelf full of my favourite, well thumbed books and an enthusiast of the ever handy Kindle.

Music is wonderful! I would like to experience more Jazz.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Hiking Te Araroa - New Zealand’s long distance thru-hike: 5 months, 3,000km, and no blisters. So many stunning campsites and amazing friends.

- Hitching across Europe and Central Asia to the Pamir mountains, and to hike along “The Roof of the World.”

- I once had an encounter with a Tiger shark and her pup while diving in the Red Sea, Egypt. It was a surreal and humbling moment that will live with me to the end. My heart skipped a beat!

- Couchsurfing: meeting incredible people and sharing memories with them in their favourite places are the moments I most treasure about travelling. CS reminds us that people everywhere are good, and we can forget this in our normal daily lives.

Teach, Learn, Share

“Give me books, French wine, fruit, fine weather and a little music played out of doors by somebody I do not know.” - Keats
