About Me

I explore cities and woods, look at old things, swim, travel, climb hills, trees, buildings. Music is important to me. I think too much. Light-hearted realist. Into empathy, socialism, social justice. Whales are my favorite animal.

I also play music. Here is some of that https://toddluffa.bandcamp.com/album/todd-luffa

I ended up in Tijuana after traveling for a few months solo from Minneapolis to Washington and then down the coast along highway 1. I camped a lot along the way and saw a lot of very beautiful wilderness.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I signed up a few years ago and then never used it. Not sure why, I've heard a lot of great things from my friends and people they've hosted. I've recently been living in Tijuana. I'm not sure how long I'll stay but I'd like to use couchsurfing to meet new people who can show me around and maybe help me with Spanish.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, The Animal Family, Sirens of Titan, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Love in the Time of Cholera, The Stranger, Kafka on the Shore, Man in the High Castle, Hell's Angels, Native Son, Ham on Rye, 54. I appreciate newer poetry and would like to get more into comics. I really enjoy Chris Ware and Michael DeForge.
Just read Dune, The Old Man and the Sea, and The Confederate General from Big Sur. Currently reading Henry Miller. God, what an eloquent, insufferable asshole.

Movies: The Princess Bride, Persona, Solyaris, Blade Runner, stuff by Stanley Kubrick, Harmony Korine, Werner Herzog, Lars Von Trier, Paul Thomas Anderson, Charlie Kaufman, David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, Godard, Spike Lee and Jonze. Happiness is one of the best films I've seen recently.

There's a lot I could list for music, but here are some favorites: Nick Drake, Animal Collective, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Young Marble Giants, Daniel Johnston, Terry Riley, Brian Eno, Grouper, The Monks, The Stooges, Arthur Russell, Suicide, Black Dice, Spacemen 3, Ween, MF Doom, A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla, Jay Electronica, The B-52's, The Durutti Column, Novos Baianos, João Gilberto, Son House, Billie Holiday, La Monte Young, Philip Glass, The Velvet Underground, Pixies, Sun Araw, Sun Ra. Satie, Chopin, Debussy. I wish I knew more about classical music.

Lately I've been listening to Can, Yusef Lateef, various Zam-rock bands and some Detroit house compilations. Julie Ruin. Wire.

I also really like stand-up comedy. Usually darker, socially-critical or absurdist stuff, anti-comedy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Traveled solo for a couple months in my car through the US with no real plan other than a general direction. I don't view it as all that impressive but it was something I hadn't done before and was important to me. I saw a lot of incredible things and learned a bit too. Also had an intense moment with a grizzly bear.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Good company and a sense of wonder/wander. Even if a little quiet at first, I can usually find something interesting to talk about. I think existence is funny, beautiful, dark, absurd and I like to share my appreciation of that with people. We can share stories about ourselves and where we came from, where we've been, where we'd like to go, what we've learned. Also, if you wanna talk about music, swap music, or even play music i could do that forever. Or really anything that has anything to do with any kind of art. If you want to practice learning each others languages I am really into that.
