About Me

Hi!
My name is Balázs I'm a (let's say) media artist, volunteering board member at the Studio of Young Artists Association in Budapest. In my work I mostly deal with power structures and hierarchies but lately I'm working on something a bit different. Here's my website if you were intereseted: https://balazsvarjutoth.com
In the last two years I've been working mainly in films, last time in a Hungarian feature still in post production.
I read considerably lot, like to travel, even alone so I can meet new people and figure my shit out, or just check out from the ordinary days for a while.

I live in the very center of Budapest in a tiny, but cozy apartment, with an amazing woman and an amazing russian wolfhound (that's a huge dog, it looks like the dragon from the Neverending Story and sleeps all day).
Anyway, I always find these short introductions very odd, but feel free to ask about my apetite taste and political standpoint.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Because I like to meet new people, I don't always make plans in time, and because it's always a nice surprise when you realize you can actually have a similar mindset with people living in such different places and cultures.

Music, Movies, and Books

I tend to like a this and that but I'm very picky and mostly into experimental (or at least -ish) music, but I like hiphop a lot (rather the contemporary), eg. I listen to JPEGMAFIA a lot lately, although I don't like his last album that much. I like really dirty techno things too, but also those peculiar Japanese chirping electronic things from the 80's youtube's algorythm is so overloaded with.

I adore films so I would not go into lists, but there's a huge list. Two weeks ago I watched Satantango (if you're not an arthouse nerd, or Hungarian: it is a 7 and a half hour long film of Béla Tarr, based on the novel of Laszlo Krasznahorkai) for the first time, and it is amazing, unexpectadly humorous and a lot easier to watch then you would expect, although the last hour and a half is tough.

I've read Infinite Jest this year, and it's really that good!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've been to an amazing festival in France, which lasted for a day and a half, and for 24 hours there is music literally everywhere around you, because it's on a hillside, with this huge trumpet coming out of this hill (it's hard to explain, but for real) is facing a cliff in front of it and so all you listen to is the echo of the music. It is truly amazing, and that is one of the very few times in my life when for a while I actually thought that everything was completely ok and also with no significance at all.
But everything loses it's weight in these little text boxes, but that was good.

Also Ed Reinhart's Abstract Painting is really something to see, if you ever had the chance.

Teach, Learn, Share

I like to talk about culture in general, also about politics, I think I have fairly good knowladge of 20th-21st century arts and film history (mostly 60-70s Hollywood, contemporary European cinema). I love music and literature too.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Good company and lot of sometimes not very consistent arguments of arts-culture-politics while drinking wine.
