About Me

I am a climate researcher and advocate based at the University of Oxford in the UK, focused mostly on the role of removing carbon from the atmosphere (with plants, chemistry, and engineered processes). I'm also starting an NGO and work as an independent consultant.

I grew up in a small town in the US (Maine), then spent my 20s in San Francisco and New York City. I've also worked in Nepal on grid-edge solar development. A few years ago I moved to the UK for a graduate programme, and have been here ever since. My work takes me mostly around Europe these days, but I'm keen to get back to traveling outside of Europe soon.

Music is a huge part of my life; I sing every day. A lot of my travel has been thanks to music groups. I was lucky enough to perform in over 50 countries and on all 7 continents.

I love the outdoors, especially hiking and climbing. I'm obsessed with animals. I want to maintain present-mindedness as much as possible, learn everything I can, and enjoy natural beauty.

I've been a CS community member since 2010.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I haven't been in a position to host for a long time unfortunately, but I love the CS community for the connections it can form when travelers come through! I'm happy to give advice on UK and European travel (I'm based in Oxford), and equally I love connecting with people in new places.

I got hooked on Couchsurfing after I stayed with an amazing CSer in southern Bosnia--we drank homemade rakia and hiked Bosnia's tallest mountain together. I also met great people in Ljubljana and San Francisco through CS.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Italo-disco, folk, early classical vocal music... so much.
Books: Pale Fire, Dune, Kafka on the Shore, Heart of Darkness, Notes from the Underground, Omnivore's Dilemma, The World Without Us
Movies: Primer, Children of Men, Apocalypse Now, Brazil, Kontroll

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Camping in Antarctica--we dug a 2 ft hole in the snow for our sleeping bags so the wind would pass over us while we slept. The sun never set, and we could hear the penguins all night!

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a climate expert, specializing in carbon removal but with experience in paleoclimates (the reconstruction of past climate change), renewables, and climate policy more generally. I'm always happy to share insights about climate change, both from the individual and societal perspective.

I love to teach multi-part singing.

I want to learn languages, particularly Italian.
