ABOUT ME

my bookshelf space is taken up mostly by hyper-conservative books from my dead grandfather's basement library. I'm pretty patient. My lover was warned by her mother not to live with me because "my goal is to live on nothing."

I was raised fundamentalist Mormon, and I've still got a strong absolutist streak. Post-modern anthropology has helped temper it considerably, but seeing people with moral and political apathy still makes me very sad.

Now my efforts are mostly channeled into urban farming, bottom-up radical politics, queer theory, Mayan anthropology, and trying to resist corporate advertising (despite a good track record, I failed at this just yesterday with a 69-cent two-liter of Dr. K).

I learned how to feel comfortable with unfamiliarity in urban D.C. and rural Guatemala.

My most pressing goal is to avoid getting dragged into the academic-industrial complex and imprisoned in the university wasteland.

PHILOSOPHY

A year or two a go I wrote here
"Not us versus them; rather, we are we." Now, I'm not exactly happy about it but I'm beginning to believe more in enemies, the reality of class war, and the importance of being willing to defend the people and things that are good that we love.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've surfed around the western U.S. and we've hosted about a dozen surfers so far this year in Salt Lake City.

For-profit hotels are an expression of a society that is too afraid to share. Couchsurfing is a perfect way to reclaim our energy from the Motel Mafia and re-invest it into meaningful personal relationships and communities.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I hitchhiked down I-15 from Utah to south of Tijuana Mexico, when I was 19. The group of gay friends in San Diego that adopted me (a mormon straight boy) for thanksgiving that year have some excellent karma coming their way. I have couchsurfed a few times since them.

bicycle maintenance, organic gardening, beekeeping, and dumpster diving for beginners (I still have a lot to learn from the experts). I taught Mayan anthropology for a couple of years and continue to do my own research. I may be able to teach you some things about insects and backyard composting. I probably know about as much about gay Mormons as you can without being one. I speak spanish and my best friend knows a lot about sheep.
