About Me

My name is Travis. I worked a corporate job for about nine years and decided that the things that I wanted to do most in life could not be achieved in a week or two of vacation time. I left my job (on good terms) and have been living aboard a sailboat since July 2015. It is a project boat and it has come a long way, and so have I, but I have been having more fun since I quit my job than I ever had in the same amount of time while being employed. I love the feeling of freedom I have that comes from not only having very little or no obligations, but being able to pick up and leave on my boat virtually any time that I want, or being able to take a last minute trip with a friend somewhere with as little as 20 minutes notice.

Ultimately, my end life goal is to have lived a good one. To say that I have seen what I wanted to see, experienced what I wanted to experience, and that I don't have any major regrets, is what life is all about. For me, there is nothing worse than to slave your entire life away for a job that pays crap, only to scrape by in life and have no stories to tell when you've reached a point in your life where adventure is limited by old age and/or physical handicaps. I want to work for every story that presents itself, especially while I'm reasonably young.

Edit: As of 12 Sept, 2019, I am living in Palmyra, VA, just outside the beautiful and historic city of Charlottesville, renovating my house. I can host, though my furniture is limited. Please request a couch or message me and I will find a way to accomodate you and show you around!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Unfortunately, the small area I live in does not get many surfers. I have had a few, but not enough. I have not surfed much either. I do very much enjoy being a part of the local CS community, which I wish would be a bit more reliable, but everyone has their own things to do...

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have only surfed and hosted a handful of times, but I would really like to post better numbers. I like meeting with local CSers too.

Interests

Soccer, beer, food, automotive vehicles of all kinds, pleasant architecture, history, art, music, old and mechanical technology, boating, hiking, the outdoors, flora and fauna, making things from raw materials, reusing salvaged things.

Music, Movies, and Books

The Motorcycle Diaries, The Mosquito Coast, Forrest Gump (or almost anything else with Tom Hanks), good crime sagas like The Godfather, Heat, Scarface, etc. Most books I own are about boatbuilding, how-to books for something, and the handful of non-fiction novels about super cool stuff. I don't have much time to read, but do enjoy fiction classics also, like 'Moby Dick', 'The Count of Monte Cristo', Poe's 'The Cask of Amontillado', etc. Music: varied. Latino, Reggae, Classic Rock, 80's and 90's rock, instrumental/classical, soundtracks, etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Crossed the Atlantic on a friend's 41 ft sailboat, and it took 31 days.

Teach, Learn, Share

I think I have a good understanding of how things should be put together, construction projects large and small, I love to cook, to sail, to fish. I like projects.
