About Me

ABOUT ME

I'm a steady, easygoing sort of bloke with a sense of humour, who enjoys meeting people. I'm a journalist, a proession I iniially went into to help combat an innate shyness, and it seems to have worked. I tend to be quiet and somewhat bookish.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like meeting different people, but I'm not fond of travelling. I enjoy being in diffeent countries, don't get me wrong, but I'm unimpressed with how tired and uncomfortable you get when going through the process of getting there. Couchsurfing is a god way of encountering different types of people from interesting places without having t be cooped up in a metal cylinder in the sky for moe than twenty hours.

Interests

I'm a really good cook, and I enjoy cooking for others. Every Friday I bring in some sort of cookie, slice or cake for my workmates. I enoy reading, especially history and science fiction (or alternate history, which combines the two genres!)

Music, Movies, and Books

Traditional British Isles folk music, modern folk, some modern pop is okay. Favourite movies include Lord of the Rings, In Which We Serve, Guns At Batasi, Casablanca, Blae Runner, Ken Branagh's Heny V, Sir Ian McKellern's Richard III and Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet. My reading preferences are history, biography and science fiction. Anything by Heinlein, Clarke and Asimov.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Swimming at night in the warm waters of the Sea of Galilee as a blood red moon rose over Tiberias. Cooling off in the spring at Ein Gedi in cold, cold water right in the middle of a hot, dry desert. Diving in the crystal clear waters around Niue, where underwater visibility is up to 50 meters, and seeing sea snakes wriggling through the ocean. And having a humpback whale and its calf swim directly underneath me on a whale watching trip in Vava'u, one of the island groups in Tonga

Teach, Learn, Share

Cooking! I'm quite a decent home cook, and even completed the well known 12 wek course at the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland in 2014.
