I taught myself how to ride a motorcycle in central America and rode around for months until it broke down in the middle of the Guatemalan wilderness. With no towns or mechanics for miles, I was stranded. I found some local guys loading logs onto a semi and I asked one of them to empty his pockets. He gave me a bewildered and confused look, but then obliged. He withdrew 76 quetzals (about $9). I looked at him and while smiling, handed him the key to my bike and took the bills. "gracias amigo! esta es mi moto, adios!" and with that I put my thumb out and hitchhiked my way onward, wherever the universe was to take me
