Ashley “Uhu” Teren (Cherokee/Swedish) is a chronic ski bum and writer for the Indigenous Education Institute. Having lived a snow filled, multi-cultural life, she spent her summers on the Navajo reservation and winters in the mountains of Utah and Idaho; she graduated from high school in Pakistan, traveled the sub-continent extensively, and lived in Hawaii for ten years. Ashley immersed herself in Cherokee, Hawaiian, Urdu, Hindi, and Thai languages. She holds a BA in English, with a minor in linguistics, a TESL certification from University of Hawaii, and recently received a M.Ed in secondary education. Ashley is passionate about indigenous ways of knowing, raising her daughter in the mountains, backcountry skiing, and the preservation of wild places.

Starting on Sun Valley’s Dollar Mountain at age two, Ashley has had a solid stance in the ski world for decades. A background in racing and coaching provides the technical skills for her to shine in the backcountry. Currently calling Southern Oregon her home, she climbs and skis the Cascades year round. Ashley is semi-nomadic, and can be found at many a climbers’ bivouac with her ‘78 Caveman camper, Koko the mountain Spaniel, good food, and an arsenal of skis.
