About Me

ABOUT ME

I gave up my full-time job several years ago, so that I would be free to travel and explore other interests. But, then, I bought a bookstore, so I'm around most of the time. I've sustained myself by dabbling in a variety of work as a writer, editor, stagehand, flower deliverer, bike mechanic, and prairie burner. I am also active in local politics and make a pretty mean fruit pie.

PHILOSOPHY

No one has ever gone to their grave thinking "Damn! I wish I'd spent more time at the office!" So, it's my goal to continue to broaden my experience now, while my body and mind are (mostly) still intact.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've been the beneficiary of loads of terrific hospitality during many trips, and I'd like to continue to foster the spirit of fellowship among travellers.

Interests

I find that I am happiest and most engaged when on a bicycle trip or involved in a theatrical production, with onstage or backstage.

Music, Movies, and Books

I enjoy anything by Steinbeck, and some of my other favorite authors are Richard Russo, Barbara Kingsolver, and the earlier works of James Clavell and John Irving. The best book I've read recently is "Driftless" by David Rhodes, and I'd recommend "Mississippi Solo" by Eddy Harris to anyone with adventure in their veins.

I don't have a TV, and don't get to the movies too often, but a few of my favorites are "The Fisher King," "Shawshank Redemption," "Big Fish," "Slumdog Millionare," the original "Star Wars" trilogy, and yes, "It's a Wonderful Life."

As for music, I'm mostly old school, with an affection for Ella Fitzgerald, the Beatles, and dead Canadian folk singers.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have biked across the USA, which I don't consider that amazing, but what I do marvel at is the number of genuinely kind, generous, trusting people who have been willing to help me complete those adventures. Those are the kinds of encounters that reaffirm my faith in people.
