About Me

I grew up in Michigan. After high school I studied acting in New York. That's how I became a barista. Unwittingly, I started to love learning about coffee - how it's sourced, how it's roasted, how it's extracted. I certainly preferred it to acting, and gradually became focused on culinary as my career path. After a formative 9 years in the city, I returned to Michigan to get my degree in culinary arts. I currently work in a kitchen near Detroit while attending school. I occasionally consult on cafes and do a bit of writing.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I usually use couchsurfing for long term travelling. I have hosted a bit in Michigan.

Interests

I love travelling. Travelling has informed everything I've done. My first kitchen job was in Belgium. My first experience with cooperative housing was in Atlanta. I started biking in New York. I think that opening yourself up to new places opens you up to new ideas and new practices. I wouldn't have the passions I have today if it hadn't been for the people I've met along my path.

Music, Movies, and Books

Musicians: Radiohead, Tom Waits, The White Stripes, St. Vincent, Angel Olsen, Patsy Cline

Writers: Ernest Hemingway, Edward Albee, Cormac McCarthy, Margaret Atwood

Film Makers: Cohen brothers, Jim Jarmusch, Wes Anderson

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have seen amazing places full of incredible people. I once saw a musician play cello and sing in a beautiful alto on a hiking path in the Catskills. I spent one summer almost entirely on the beach, and saw the ocean in all types of weather. I walked through coffee farms in Colombia. I worked on a pig farm in France. If it's improbable, and requires hiking boots, I am there.
