ABOUT ME

I'm a philosophy grad student in Oxford.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Not that extensive, actually. In 2007, when I lived in Toulouse, I met some cool people. In 2008, when I was interrailing, I met some more cool people. When interrailing again in 2010, I did some surfing, and later in 2011 also some hosting.

Interests

I'm passionate about many things. Apart from what I study (philosophy) I also enjoy the arts: music and literature especially (though if I lived in a city with better art galleries I'm sure I'd name the visual arts here as well). Occasionally I write poems. I have an interest in world politics, but studying philosophy has made me doubt whether I'm in any way qualified to comment on the topic. I previously studied intellectual history for a term, which I found very fascinating, but for better or for worse, I haven't had much time to pursue the topic further as of late. At some point, I'd like to get back to it. I'm basically interested in everything – everything is, after all, interconnected. My goal is to find out how.

When all these over-ambitious intellectual pursuits become a bit too much, I go for a bike ride or take a walk.

Music, Movies, and Books

When it comes to music, I'm especially fond of classical music and experimental jazz (60's and onwards). Some of my favourite composers are Bach, Beethoven, Mahler, Shostakovich, Messiaen and Wagner. I also take a deep interest in contemporary classical music, where there is a lot of beautiful stuff going on today. Sometimes I can enjoy a bit of that popular music as well.

ome of my favourite directors are Welles, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Hitchcock, Fellini – the usual bunch.

Ah, books! What would life be without them? For the sake of convenience, the following list is limited to more “literary” authors – philosophers and scientists are excluded: Fernando Pessoa, Thomas Bernhard, Roberto Bolaño, Jorge Luis Borges, T.S. Eliot, W.G. Sebald, and Marcel Proust. I also keep returning to two Swedish poets: Tomas Tranströmer and Gunnar Ekelöf. Of course, no such list is exhaustive – I read and enjoy a lot of different things.
