One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Bus trip from Chengdu to Kangding, China
When you look at a map the distance from Chengdu, the capital of the Chinese state of Sichuan, to Kangding situated in the mountains doesn't seem to be very long - maybe around 200 kilometres. However, the bus trip was scheduled to take almost a full day - and what a trip! We left Chengdu heading south, on our way out from the city centre we crossed three orbital motorways. The first two motorways surrounded by wide areas of new development had heavy traffic, but the third was deserted - not a single car - the lanes were just waiting for development to come.
We continued heading southwest through the rural, somewhat hilly, Sichuan on a newly build motorway. After around 1½ hour we left the motorway by Ya'an and soon entered the mountains - this is where the Himalayas start! The road became more narrow and the mountains grew fast and became steeper on the way towards the pass. After a while we passed the first spot where falling rocks had destroyed parts of the road. That repeated several times - often with remainings of ruined cars and trucks hit by rocks. This road wasn't without risk! The average speed was considerably lowered due to the road conditions.
Finally, we reached the pass tunnel and the rest of the trip wasn't so spectacular as the stage from Ya'an to Luding.
And Kangding? Well, perhaps the less touristed spot we visited in China. Unfortunately, the nearby mountain of Gongga Shan (7556 m!!) wasn't visible. But we tasted the Himalayas and the Tibetan culture.

Visit a supermarket in a foreign country. It really tells you a lot of the people who live there...
